I think something like this would be a good starting point, around $195. Would be hard getting used to not being able to switch inputs at the touch of a button.

make your own. i did, and it cost me nuthin', as i had the bits just lying around.

yes, it's sad about all that fire. lots of poor native animals have been caught up in it.

.... wot's worse, is that one of the major ones was caused by our Army deciding to have Artillery practice on a day of Extreme Fire Danger. go figure. (wot r THEY smokin'?)

Glad all is going well! Actually if you look at preamplifier specs having a volume control doesn't seem to degrade the numbers. The tone controls help tweak the sound to compensate for speakers, room acoustics and other areas where you can compensate for imperfect conditions.

Pioneer made some good preamps in their day - I use the pre out of the SA-9900 integrated amplifier and it's awesome (the amplifier stage is good too). The Spec stuff is quite good and I understand the Elite hardware is very good.
9900// Or was that the 9800 II???

There are some that say they like the sound of a 9900 better than the Spec series. I really wanted to get my hands on the Spec preamp and amp back then but with a beer budget it wasn't happening. It is a nice sounding integrated amp with nice phone stages. I bought the Phase Linear 400 a few months later 'cause I needed to drive two pairs of 901s. Used a Soundcraftsmen preamp mostly but switched back and forth with the 9900 pre.

I can't solder for shit, since I messed up my Nakamichi 480 deck I am very reluctant to touch anything with an soldering iron if its more complex than a dry joint. Maybe you could make me one, I'd pay for it.

I've also heard the phono sections in the 9800 were better than the Spec 1.

Get to hook up a pair of those myself. My wife's cousin, the proprietor of the "Duck Creek Ranch" and C & W guitar player wound up with a pair of the 4311B's.

Oh you're just gonna luv those Lee.
They might sound a bit 'dry' at first, as they do like the 'loudness' button IN at low volumes, but once you give 'em a bit of stick, they don't 'arf come to life.
:happy7:

*Keep in mind that they're an 'upside down' speaker box, as they were to designed to be 'flown' (suspended), from the ceiling in recording studios, and so their tweets are at the bottom.
... but you can have 'em any way you want.
;)
