My understanding from a tech is that the 900 has better heads than the 950.
They aren't the same as the 1000's?

I think he said FERRITE heads I am not sure. But he said the heads were not as good as the 900 heads and because of his accent I couldn't understand why. You are welcome to call him,he is a nice guy.And the Pioneer CT-F1000 has ferrite heads, too. Although the specs on the 1000 aren't as good as either the CT-F950 or CT-F1250, I can get a very good recording out of my 1000. This deck is a true sleeper and can hold its own amongst decks of that vintage costing twice as much, namely Nakamichi and Tandberg.

Well I don't know about that.I think that is taking things to extremes. And the Pioneer CT-F1000 has ferrite heads, too. I commented in TH that the shoot out in Innovative Audio proved conclusively that the Pioneer CTF-1000 was the winner and beat the Tandberg 3014 and others. But someone who was the author of the event came in and corrected me saying it DID NOT mean the CTF-1000 was the winner at all. He waspresent as well. I would have to find the URL of the TH thread or you can trust my word. You may have read it before, but this is what I base my opinion on in a real-time environment, as you would expect if a few of us tape enthusiasts were trying a few of our own decks out:

@Nando I have the Kef105IIs,AR- P128PS it is an amplified speaker, and a JBLp50s upstairs I have a pair of Klipsch KLF10s and a Miller and Kreisel MX125 subwoofer which has not been connected as I get plenty of lower bass from the Klipsch KLF10s.All have been through 3 moves except the M&K subwoofer which was through 1 move. I guess I should sell the subwoofer. It has its own crossover. However, the cost to ship would be overwhelming so I haven't put it on eBay.It is standing upstairs as a table.
I put the RadioShack Tweeters On top of the L50s and they sound better.I like the Klipsch even more than the Kefs The JBLs are P50sI auditioned the KEF 105.2 speakers at Innovative Audio. Those are great speakers. Your JBLs are L 50s? Sounds like you are set for speakers.

I went to the trouble of searching for this tech. His telephone # is 801-824-5811. Call him as he is the one that stated the 900 tapes are better than the 950 heads. I tried to find the "VINTAGE KNOB" I tried a search in Google. No dice! I tried Vintageknob.com No Dice! I give up! I don't know why the type changed to Dark type faces after I copied and pasted the Tech's Phone #.I found the Vintage Knob. It is thevintage knob.org not com! I hate to tell you this but the site has nothing at all about the type of heads in the 900 and does not have the 950 at all. If you call that tech bare in mind he has a heavy European accent but he is a very nice guy so he is a little hard to understand. And all I know about the 950 heads I learnt from The Vintage Knob...
But there is nothing for the 950,Anyway Nando you definitely need a CT-A1 to complete your collection. My understanding from the web site it is a rare deck. I like the appearance but with Black for me it is hard to see the controls at my age.Ben: Once you are on the page for the CT-F900 at : http://www.thevintageknob.org/pioneer-CT-F900.html click on the specs box on the bottom of the left side of the page and this will lead you to the specs including the head composition.
