I have acces to ( and working knowledge) a lathe at work and was wondering if anyone needs knobs?

I’d need a decent drawing (bar napkin) but I could make knobs once in a while.

If we need hundreds, I can do a cad file and get them run off at one of the hundreds of aerospace shops littering the northeast.

Let me know.

PS alternate materials (black delrin, copper etc.) are also possibilities.
 
Knobs maybe. But if you can find the hex stock, turn the bolts for the 400 front panels. I talked to a local retired machinist abot 10 years ago who was going to turn the bolts. The project got abandoned because he could not find the hex stock. Also the ferrules for the series II rack handles.
 
I think there is a spare one on the server :knob: :faroah: :joker: Nobody wants it.
 
I would need a drawing but I can look at it.

With multi-axis machining centers, round stock can be made into any hex. How about a five-point head?

Hex head so a nut driver fits on it.

ok. What size nut driver? How high is the head? Is it rounded top or flat? Polished finish? Is it load bearing, and if so, would stainless be suitable? Thread pitch diameter and length? I might be able to find something if I know what I need.

I got some cool flanged stainless button heads for restoring my son’s wagon. 316 stainless too so good forever.

Probably Aluminum Alloy 1100 or Alloy 3003 would work for the face plate bolts. Dimensions are:
Bolt length overall: 3/4" (.750")
Distance across hex flats: 7/16" (.440") as previously discussed
Height of hex head: 1/4" (.250") this is non-standard, but gives the unmistakable Phase Linear look
Length of thread: 1/2" (.500")
Pitch of thread: 1/4"-20tpi with a lead-in bevel of 30 degrees, this is an industry standard

There is a circular flange under the hex head that has a diameter of .420" and protrudes under the head toward the threads by .010" to keep the hex points off the surface. There is 45 degree chamfer on the bolt head for a distance of .030", this is a standard in the industry. Finally, the top of the bolt head is "engine turned" or jewelled in a single concentric circle by machine tooling.

The originals are aluminum shoulder bolts. Also I included the ferrules for rack handles on Series II units. ferrules are .375 ID, .50 OD and .20 Tall. Distance from bottom to the bevel appears to be about .125.

So, it seems a standard aluminum bolt with the face (top) turned would do it.

Those sleeves will be easy too.
 
The ferrules were sent out for anodizing. I can't remember if the color was clear anodize or champagne colored.
 
Correction: head height is .156 so thinner than .250.

I’ll check stainless. 316 has a good “whiteness” that should look good. 304/18-8 is a bit grayer color.
