If a Fella was toooooo

Handbuild a Joe King designed White Oak Signature Series Kick Ass Class A/B fully comp amp what would it include??

Thoughts fellers....

I've been wondering when something like this might come along. It is starting to look like a no brainer. You've got guys making:

Driver boards
Backplane boards
Lighting boards
DC Protect boards
Chassis
Heat sinks
What else?

That's getting awfully close to being able to produce new amps. Kits? Wouldn't be cheap by any stretch, but...

I must confess that this is not what I expected, but it could be seen as another step in that direction. There's that Germanium shortage, but surely that could be worked around.

Did anybody mention honkin' (analog!) VU meters yet? All the juice in the world can't make up for the lack of hypnotism those big VU's provide.

Bigger VU meters, yep. Look like some of the old Technics amps. Bigger PS caps, yep. Fancy caps in the right places for best SQ. Kinda what you're doing now cept gonna need a bigger box to stick it in. What about golden ears and the DC protect board? Any actions to be taken here?

Absolutely a good call on the dc protection circuitry. Must have.
Also, the power supply needs to have an inrush current limiter so we don't dim the lights in the neighborhood when we power it up.

Agreed on the big VU meters. No self respecting monster amp should be w/o them. Being this is a Lee build, perhaps aviation Mach meters could be incorporated

or a "custom" scale, perhaps?

quiet--->wife acceptable-->wife pissed--->wife service divorce papers as we speak-->man are you in trouble...

:smokin:

The red zone of the meter could be labeled as "Violation of Local Noise Ordinance," or "VOLNO."

Or perhaps "police pulling into the driveway" LMAO

How about the same size meters, perhaps Dave can perform meter surgery to replace the scale, or leave it like it is...

With the connections improved she can't tell difference now. DC protect is a major concern...

Cost effective? Make as simple as possible. If you put caps in parallel could you go with smaller, faster caps. My RAM is working over time at the moment. Anyone ever seen a digital meter on an amp? If you want color when it goes into the red have the meter go red. Have them read in true wattage. Bring it off the outputs. Just an on off switch. Goertz flat wire internal wiring on the inputs and outputs. Zipper tubing on all wiring.Just me processing RAM.

Could put one of these under a flipcover for when you really want to piss off the neighbors, probably gonna need bigger trannys though LMAO

It will be at least 3 pieces, cause you don't want 2 of those power supplies where you have to pick them both up at the same time...

Call me crazy---BuT!! Does Joe seem like a guy that will be ever satisfied?? And if not, what's next??

Larrt I love the "meter go red" part. IIRC, that's not hard to do.....Half of your zip tubing applications can be done with proper routing. I think that's the biggest difference on this last 400. Kelvin connections where I could, all AC under the caps, only AC going out of there wasa 48 volts and it's running in a twisted, shielded pair. VERY quiet amp.

Pair of monoblocks for me, please!

If a fella was tooooooo.......... Maybe make a pair of WOPL'd PL 400, single VU on each one, some sexy(but no too sexy) rca jacks/ speaker terminals, IEC for power cord, copper cooling fins(and the price soars), red anodized faceplate- yeah I would get on the boat, for sho!!! Let me know where to send my deposit.

After hearing Timdalf's amp, I am more than intrigued by the concept of having a firebreather(s) of my own someday.

Good stiff transformer with the same power supply (simple yet effective)

Essentially find a currently produced set of transformer and meters, design for an enclosure that also matches the 700 White Oak backplane's hole pattern exactly. Apply the best practice heat sink technology with on demand active cooling. Match the speaker post pattern with Don's 700 DCP. Done... and nobody has to go hunting for old carcasses to experience the WOPL sound.
