Here are some pictures. Not knowing much about this, will I have to do anything differently than the instructions indicate for its installation into the 700B?

If you want it, I'll be happy to send it to you, Joe. I don't know if it would be of any value to you, but if so, I'll send it to you...Lee wants the PCB...so as soon as I have the replacements, these will be in the mail..

So, if this is a rare board, was it early in the production of the 700B, or later? If I'm not mistaken, the hyphen seperated 8 digit serial numbers were earlier production than the 4 or 5 digit serial numbers? I can't remember the date codes on the ouput and driver transistors, but I don't even know if they are original to this amp, or could have been replacements early on?

Serial number is 1073-110B, so I am assuming October of 1973? The Phase Linear history says that the 700B was introduced in August of 1973, which would make this a fairly early one.....maybe even the 110th? B?

Pretty crunchy, those are the meter limiting resistors so hoping your meters are OK. Test them using the procedure I put on the forum.

The 700B you have Sutton is the 110th 700B produced DURING October of 1973. The PL17A board----Ed is researching that and will get back to us.

Just read your posts. sorry I've not been staying on top of this. I have just been messing with the 700B. Not really working on it. I can't put any power to her till I get some parts. Joe informed me that I should not put power to it unless a Zobel is in the circuit. I'm glad I had not tried to DBT her, and I might have, had I not seen the resistor problem on the meter board. I will have to find your post about meter testing. I don't know that I remember seeing it, but I may have, Does it involve a 9 volt battery? I hope the meters aren't toast. The meter board looks pretty daunting. I think there are about 15 connections to the board from various places. I am glad Ed can help with this board. I hope it can be replaced with Joe's, but I'm sure it is doable.

Just last week I helped a guy replace his PL17A with the White Oak Light Board. It is a direct drop in but the meter sensitivity switch needs wires relocated which I can lead you through.

The only info I can find is from the White Oak wesite FAQ's....and the following text. Is this test valid for meters in the 700B, or only for meters from the 400?

"How do I test my VU meters to know that they are working properly?

It is easy to test your VU meters. Using a 1.5V AA cell battery and a 3.9K ohm resistor, attach the negative side of the battery to the minus terminal of the meter. Attach the positive side of the 1.5V battery to one side of the 3.9K ohm resistor. Attach the other side of the 3.9K ohm resistor to the plus terminal of the meter. If the meter is good, the needle should move to approximately the -4 dB meter position on the meter scale."

Thanks Joe.....I've also been reading about the caps for the Experimenter Kit, and the Samwha caps got some bad press for a series of caps that were bad....I think the WB Series, but those were obselesed in 1999, so I hope I didn't get any from that series. I will have to check. Got the Cap Kit put together though, and they are LOOKING FINE....now I'll have to wait for a DONOR 400 to come along cheap...

Do you have a link for other caps for your kit that are not totally out there in terms of price? The Samwha one are 100V 8,200 uf for $3.00, but if they are defective then they aren't wrorth anything...

I need a donor unit casue all the other 400's I have are complete and up and running...I am working on the 700B now. After I finish it, I will need another 400 to work on...THAT is the one that will recieve these caps..

Oh, I finally have the PCB replaced in the 700B, so the ooriginal one I'm sending to you is offically cut loose and ready to ship. It will go out Monday along with the MONSTER caps and other stuff. How close is one of the PL preamps ready for shipment? Is one of them in pretty good cosmetic condition? I think I also mentioned that I would be using the phono section along with the other inputs for CD, DVD, and stuff. I remember Larry and you talking about the phono section and the fact that had you known he would be using it, you would have selected a different opamp...you know me. I usually want the full meal deal....with big fries and drink...

Oh, do you have any interest (or does Ed) in the original meter/light board? If you want it, I'll put it in the box too...Just let me know..

Yes Sutton, Ed is interested in all the factory stuff that is still serviceable. BTW, he's looking for some heatsinks for one of his personal 700's, anybody got some spares??

What is Ed in need of? All pieces and parts of Phase Linear? Does he need more PCB's for 400 SeI, 700B PCB? Meter Boards? All designations? Maybe there could be a trade in program developed by Phoenix, ? I, like everyone who has upgraded a Phase Linear, have all the old original boards, transistors, or whatever we were replacing. I'll bet the old binding posts could be cleaned up enough for re-use with a Super Desoldering Machine like Lee has....and those are not cheap NEW (the speaker binding posts)...

I am sending the PL 700B PCB I have, but are other original PCB's from 400's needed? Driver and output transistors? original storage capicators? I just don't know what Ed's situation might be...

We are the trade in program Suttron. That's how we get power switches , factory TO-3 hold down screws, 3-post ground l;ugs, factory RCA lugs etc.....
