I was moving some power cables and gear around - unplugged what I thought was the turntable, but it was the tuner. Yes, I was listening to FM at the time. Sound dropped out. Before I plugged it back in, I hit the "power" button. As soon as the plug hit the outlet, there was a "thump" ... and then silence. I pulled the Cyrus out, took off the cover, and the heatsink was HOT. Fuses were fine. I had too much $ in that amp. The tuner is just fine, thanks for asking, and it was fifteen bucks at an estate sale. Of course it's OK.

The shop system is up again, using the Luxman A-007 as a pre and the Proton AA-1150 as a power amp.

You need to explain what it is you have.... You don't blow outputs on a tuner. Do you mean a RECEIVER?????? Big difference. My tuner puts out .7V, my receiver puts out quite a bit more.

Looks like I fried the outputs on my Cyrus 2 amp. The tuner, cause of it all, is fine, dammit. No, it's not the tuner's fault, it's my fault.

First of all, and this is important..... You don't munky with the stereo unless it's ALL TURNED OFF,AND OR UNPLUGGED. That's an expensive lesson that you should not have to sit through. You know better.

You may have fried the outputs OF THE AMP......, but let a tech determine WHAT you blew up.

So, if I understand what you are saying is that you accidently unplugged the Tuner. Then you turned the Tuner "Off" just before you plugged the tuner back into the wall receptacle?
Then when the Tuner power plug was inserted into the wall receptacle, there was a "thump"?
It sounds like there might have been some DC voltage on the output of the Tuner. Can you put a DC voltmeter on the output of your Tuner and see? Try with the power on first. Then power the Tuner off, connect the meter and turn the power back on (or better yet plug it back in as you did before). See if any DC voltage spikes on the output of the Tuner.

Thanks for the advice - I took the tuner out of the system and also the Luxman amp. Now I'm running a JVC CD recorder, a Marantz AV600 tuner/preamp, Proton AA-1150 power amp and a pair of Yamaha NS5 speakers. The sound is glorious. I don't think the Luxman is as good as I thought when I first got it.

UPDATE - I'm considering converting the Cyrus into a preamp. I put it on the bench today and looked it over. Like the original pot on the Arcam, the gain pot is a small thing, connecting to the circuit board via six solder lugs. One side is labeled "left" and the other "right." Can I simply tap off the output side of the pot and have a preamp, or is there more involved? How do I know the signal lug from the ground? I'm no expert in this...

Then you can trace signal from ground lugs.
The wiper is usually signal, it's the moving part..

It took some probing, some prep, some soldering - but it works!

The sound is glorious, and it's making music in my shop system as I type this. The main system is next.

Thank you, Lee, for your words of encouragement!

The preamp section (not the dead phono section) was already recapped with Silmic II for the polarized caps and Nichicon Muse for the non-polarized caps.

I expect great things from my Cyrus preamp.

Maybe I just did not notice how good the Cyrus pre sounded with the first set of output cables, but with the second set of the same brand & model of cable, the sound is quick and dynamic. I have been listening over the past two days to all of the Fresh Aire CD's, one through eight, and I know they are not to everyone's taste, and I admit some of it is not so fresh - but, they have good detail and great dynamics. Dynamics go through this pre like the proverbal salts through a widow woman! I don't think I'd care to use the pre with the WOPL that is here, at least only with speakers I don't care for...

There were artifacts in the signal and I had to jiggle the source selector from time to time. So, the other day, I pulled the Cyrus out and put in the Luxman, which I connected to the power amp with some fairly high-end AR component video cables. It sounds really good for once. As for the Cyrus, it got stripped down, the source selector got deoxed and I put the heat sink back in - it lends support for the main board. With parts and cabinet back together, I hauled it back upstairs, hooked it up to the Pig and listened to some music via the Ohm F's. Playback is flawless, but I suspect it will sound better in the main system, where it routes through the tube buffer. I'm calling this a success! The Cyrus lives!!
