ESS AMT 1C

Not sure about build year yet, Jimmy. Crossovers will need to be recapped/ upgraded(?) in the near- future but still sound good. These will end up biamped with an active crossover when I pull the original x- overs out to work on them.

I have a pair of 1A's I got a t a thrift store for $49. of course everything was dryrotted. Any ideas on what it would take to convert to the 1B or 1C? The 1A's supposedly have a lower crossover point that stresses the Heil.

Just noticed this thread Doug, I think I have some Polk passive radiators in the garage you could have had for free. Nice looking speakers! What's wrong with your amp????

Not sure what it would take to covert from 1A > 1 C/D, crossovers at the very least. I know there are a couple of kats over at AK that are ESS junkies and I will try and see if I can't get them to chime in on this thread.... The crossover point seems to have be changed over the run of these as they tried to match the lightning-fast high and mid response vs. the slower woofer. Probably more of an issue at higher volumes as all sounds creamy- shmooove through my system at lower listening levels.

Yeah, so they sound about a bajillion times better with the radiators- imagine that.

Also, are those woofers surrounds foam or rubber? It's hard to tell from the picture.

Rubber surrounds, Jimmy. I put some speaker adhesive on the damaged spots and we'll keep out fingers crossed......

Thanks for the offer and I agree that they are pretty sweet lookin'. Not sure what's up with Phyllis, but I will get her fixed after the Holidays.

Got a pretty good idea what's wrong with her. It's not blowing fuses , and has .......what minus 80 vdc on the speaker outs or plus 80vdc?? Either way it's 99% bet that's it's a bad component on the driver board. A pico fuse burnt on the backplanes would not cause that.....I think. That's a question for Joe...

Two Differnt Crossovers

Looks like they were beginning to phase out the 1C version and I have a 1D crossover in the "newer" speaker. Serial #4000ish versus the #2400ish of the "older" one. Both speakers are labeled as 1C.

What I believe to be the correct 1C crossover:

Woofer were also mounted differently between the pair- one with driver input terminals up, which seems better in this model to me, and one with terminals down. With the terminals up, wiring can be bundled closer to the crossover making for a neater cabinet.
