Cool.

What a shame there were not more rock titles released on this true audiophile format. I have a few hybrid discs but neither of my CD players can handle SACD.

I bet that sounds great Miles.

It does. (on a real SACD player......)

If I ever get a new CD player again I'll look for one capable of SACD replay. As I said earlier - I just wish there were more genres covered other than classical and cr*p jazz.

Nando,

Forget the K340.

If you want a real "bang for the buck" check out for this one:

The Samson SR850.

It's an AKG clone, but with an EXCELLENT soundstage, and with a price of +/- $50,- new.....

Check also these parts of your AKG 240:

Those materials will desintegrade over the years, and so is the same with the earpads.

The damping material on the inside will also suffer with the same problem, but it needs some more expierence to replace it.

Note: All these problems of mileage will have their effect on the soundquality overall....

Maybe I should start a new thread for this, but I'm sure Daren won't mind to put it in here....
Thanks for the resto tips, Miles. You recommended the Samson SR850s to me some time ago. You can't go wrong at that price!

Nando.

This guy is so right, records listening is a special experience at least for me all the time, i do feel the vinyl touch and the 3D sound coming from 2 speakers and this is more than special, never experienced that with CD's :cyclopsani:
I have noticed this three dimensional effect on my best, well mastered records.

There is something special about vinyl but I still prefer my compact discs.

Records are nice but they get dusty, worn out and all that surface noise...

And new ones are bloody expensive!
Yes, they play so special,,, and i thought they get dusty and wear out, not so true after all and i have old ones played a lot with those record grinders at 10+ gr VTF,,, i cleaned them well and they play so sweet with my good turntable right now and with little noise, i'm surprised how the good sound stayed hidden there for me to discover it after all those years... :p

Yes, new records are too expensive indeed and maybe not so good quality like the older ones.
I have solved problems with dust, dirt, wear and surface noise by playing records wet with water and a drop of detergent, using a record cloth, a few times to clean the record grooves deeply and thoroughly. The stylus needs to be cleaned a few times, at first.
Now my records without scratches play virtually noise free.

I am a big supporter of buying used music media: vinyl records, pre-recorded cassettes, CDs, 8-track pre-recorded tape, open-reel pre-recorded tape, etc.

Nando.
I have been buying a lot of used music media lately from op shops, tip shops, second hand dealers. Most of the vinyl records play perfectly after a good clean.

Hi Chris,

I'd be keen to hear more about this - especially work on boomboxes.
I buy vintage amplifiers, boomboxes, cassette decks, turntables, graphic equalizers and other stereo equipment from op shops, tip shops, second hand dealers and garage sales. Most of this gear needs preventative maintenance as well as a good clean. A small percentage of it needs fixing but I go a step further and make modifications to improve performance, reliability and sound quality. I add other useful features such as volume boost and AUTOMATIC BATTERY CHARGER for Boombox.
