Even I will admit to looking through compact discs (and records) at charity stores and markets just on the off-chance that there is something there.

I think the key word is quality though. It is pretty easy these days to amass a huge music collection but a little more difficult to build one that is credible in terms of content and SQ.

Agreed. CD's at the thrifts are another story though. I generally purchase anywhere from 2 to 10 a week from the used shops. Again the quality of what im seeing is important, hence why sometimes I buy 1 or 2. I dont buy them for the sake of having. CD prices being what they are though. I try to buy em up. In the last year or so ive more than doubled my cd collection. Going from about 2 to 3 hundred to 700+.

Any good independent/secondhand record store in the UK will have plenty of cheap CDs. Now is certainly the time to buy those little silver discs.

I don't know where you get the time to listen to all that new music Ben! I'll be lucky if I can play five discs a week without being interrupted.

If anything, I am looking to reduce my CD collection. I have been going through it these last few months, weeding out those titles that either never get played or are not essential.

I have to be in the mood, but I'll do some digging and grab records that look crappy if the price is right and perhaps they will clean up well. Great example is this weekend, I saw a copy of Parliament: Mothership Connection in the dollar bin at a record store. The cover was taped on one side and someone had drawn on the back of it. No inner cover and the record looked to have a layer of grime all over it. But, for a buck I grabbed it on the off chance. Got it home, scrubbed the heck out of it, dropped the needle and.... Played quiet and clean. So the cover's a bit rough, but for a buck a great playing copy of a great album. I do get tired of digging through the piles of crap at thrift shops, where about 98% of the records are garbage. But, if you stick with it you eventually come across some buried treasure. I've been wandering thrift stores for years, mostly just come across some run of the mill stuff that I grab cheap, but I do recall one day a couple years back running across a pile of Blue Note, Riverside and Prestige jazz titles, all original pressings a bit dusty but otherwise in good shape mixed in with the Herb Alpert and Montovanis. Of course, that's the 1 in a 1,000 bit of luck and not everyone is interested in spending time digging to get lucky now and then. I mean, my time over the years and years is surely worth more than I found on even the best of finds. But, if you enjoy it and happen to spend time in thrift stores of flea markets anyway, you can come up with some special finds hidden in the dust.

I'm gearing up to do some real digging sometime down the line though. I was just in Chicago and a friend told me about a record store in the rougher part of town that has a ton of obscure NOS soul records upstairs and a basement that is nothing but a giant pile of vinyl all strewn randomly about, lifted a few inches off the floor to prevent water damage but much of the place is supposedly covered in mold and mildew and grime. Apparently it is not uncommon for people to show up with face masks and goggles before descending into the basement to dig for a couple days at a time. Something down there must be worth it. The guy that told me about this place is a 45 collector though so I'll have to find out if the place has enough 33s to be worth it too or if it is mostly just a place for 45 hunters.

That is hardcore!

I appreciate that the hunt is arguably the best part of record collecting although today, I'm more inclined to identify all the stuff that I actually want online and just order it off the net.

Not quite as exciting as rummaging through some dusty boxes, but it works for me.

Yeah, I've seen pictures of that basement, looks like a pretty foul place. I can't see myself getting that far gone, but I do wanna spend a day or so flipping through the stacks upstairs.

I definitely do more looking for specific items than random digging these days as well. Just not enough time otherwise and the good finds are increasingly rare. I just went through a pretty big cull of doubles and other things I didn't want and traded them in for a lot fewer records that I'll actually play. The collection is definitely at the point where quality over quantity is the priority.

I am a big supporter of buying used music media: vinyl records, pre-recorded cassettes, CDs, 8-track pre-recorded tape, open-reel pre-recorded tape, etc.

Most times, the best vinyl can be bought at stores which, exclusively, deal in selling used and new records. But, a bulk of my records have been found here, locally, at the thrift stores. And a lot of those titles have made it on to dozens of mix tapes I have recorded for members. Because I am known locally for buying vinyl, if a carton, or more of records come in, I have the opportunity to look at the stock first before it's put on the sale shelf. And most of the vinyl I presume is original-owner. How can I tell?: usually the condition of the vinyl is as good as new with the owner's name on the inner part of the jacket, or elsewhere. There are many reasons the records end up there. My preference is having a very good to excellent album from the day, than a remake of the original. Present mastering, sometimes, leaves a lot to be desired.

Remind me again how many headphones you have...
Make it 14 since today......
This AKG K240DF beauty arrived yesterday, and with some work on it today it's brought back to the state of new:

These classic AKG can's are an absolute reference as it comes to studio monitoring.

Thanks for the link Miles. Some images there that I have not seen before.

Steely Dan sounds about perfect for you with their slickly produced albums.
I always loved the DAN.... Great music to test some equipment with!

FOURTEEN. Wow!
Didn't count all the "in-ears" around the house with em.

(I don't like "in-ears", must be the reason I guess....)

Nevertheless...: I've decided that some stuff have to go; Sold the Sony 825-S dual deck last week for a very reasonable price.
The 510 is also on the list to go, I don't wan't to pile up stuff again like I did in the past.

I think I can handle all the cassette "taping things" in a sufficient way with my 3 headers....

Makes sense.

I can't see there being too many takers for my collection of (cheap) in‑ear headphones.

I love your pair of AKG K240DF headphones, Miles. I have been contemplating buying another pair of AKGs. You have plenty of experience using AKGs and Sonys. Would those K240DF be the ones to get? I wanted a pair of K340, but they all seem to have the common problem of the cord strain relief not preventing the wires from detaching inside the muff, thus resulting in loss of one of the channels. I don't have that problem with the 240 series.

The Steely Dan "Gaucho" SACD was the first SACD I bought. It's unmatched for sound quality!

Nando,

Forget the K340.

If you want a real "bang for the buck" check out for this one:

The Samson SR850.

It's an AKG clone, but with an EXCELLENT soundstage, and with a price of +/- $50,- new.....

Check also these parts of your AKG 240:

Those materials will desintegrade over the years, and so is the same with the earpads.

The damping material on the inside will also suffer with the same problem, but it needs some more expierence to replace it.

Note: All these problems of mileage will have their effect on the soundquality overall....

Maybe I should start a new thread for this, but I'm sure Daren won't mind to put it in here....

Yup, and as a real dissident I'm going for the max to test these pair of cans....

....
Cool.

What a shame there were not more rock titles released on this true audiophile format. I have a few hybrid discs but neither of my CD players can handle SACD.

I bet that sounds great Miles.
