Carver C-4000

It's reverb as well, not just a delay, but yes, an external processor should be able to do the same thing (I used a pair of MXR175 delays for this in the 80's . . . ) The manual gives a pretty good idea what is going on. There are two selectable delay times (varies by S/N) and a regen control to set reverb level.

And, to clarify a prior statememt, the 4000 was never made without the amp - that was the 4000t. Yes similar, but considered a different model by Carver. (I use the amp in mine with no issues . . . )

Correct ! Sorry for mismatch .

A couple years later Panasonic (National) started marketing their "Ambiance" feature. I have it on my FX-F35 boom box, and it sounds good.

I believe it is a mix of the opposite channel with a delay and frequency bump, probably similar to what Bob was trying to do (or did).

But maybe that would be more betterer of a sonic improvement. Note it is not trying to be a surround function, it is just an "enhancement" to stereo to give the illusion of increased width and depth. Actually, it is mudding the signal.

I'm convinced a recap, regulators, motorized blue velvet volume pot, and new RC4136s made a noticeable difference in sound on my C-1. I haven't done the RCA jacks yet but that's my next move. The old ones are cheap and nasty.

It gives you a delay and you get an echo just millisecond's behind the original signal. It's KIND OF a surround but some don't consider it surround.

That sounds kind of like the old Dyna Quad circuit from Dynaco. It came in a stand alone box or as a circuit in the SCA-80Q integrated amp which could be switched in and out. Wonder how close it really is?

But, unless you did those things one at a time and listened/tested, it's hard to know what made the biggest change.

I got a DOA C1, and just the recap was stunning. Vol pot motor won't change the sound (my originals cleaned up fine - although remote would be a nice convenience), and regulators won't make the power any cleaner (hum, etc.), and since it's not an amp, no variable loads, so should be stable, regulated or not, so not sure what audible diff that will make either. The op-amps are the upgrade that likely has the most potential . . . . (caps are more maintenance than upgrade).

I now have the RCA panel replacement boards available now for doing that RCA jack conversion when you are ready. Makes it easy.

The small form factor RCA jacks are required to fit within the openings in the preamp sheet metal. The 8.0 x 0.75 metric versions fill this bill.

Good question Kyle. High quality from Neutrik-REAN. Others are available (mostly from China) with lower quality. These are what Perry is using presently on his rebuilds.

When you have to get 13 white, and 13 red , it adds up quick. I have to charge an extra $100 to pay for the 26 jacks (over 60 with shipping from Mouser) and cutting and stripping/tinning about 100 wires to get them all installed but the results are great. I guess you don't need my measurement of where to cut the C-1 jack panel to use on the 4000/4000t..... Are you going to advert these on your site Joe?
