Bryston 4B

I think it is a good amp; BUT and that is a big BUT. IMHO I think you will be in for a let down. That is just me saying that. LOL

I just want to be able to say a White Oak 1000 stomped the Dogf(*&^ out of a Bryston 4B.

I have a pair of 4B Bryston amps and a pair of 7B Bryston monoblocks. One of the monoblocks has visited Canada two times, os they aren't bulletproof. Very nice amps, but I think a Hafler is every bit as good for a whole lot more money. One thing is, the Hafler will need new output caps, and then they can do some serious thumping. I still bet that none can hold a candle to Lee's reworked Phas Linears though, and I haven't even heard one of them yet. Don't get me wrong...they are vry nice amps, but they aren't cheap either.

And if I remember right don't they have some proprietary parts??

I don't know. One of the 7B's has been back to Canada two times. I know that. Just wouldn't work...Had to buy the Bryston box to ship them in too, or they wouldn't accept it. So they have a proprietary cardboard box. And the rubber feet for the pair they did GIVE to me FREE! And I bought them second hand from the Bay. Nice amps to be sure, but nothing special I don't think. I just liked the twenty year warranty thing...plus at the time, they were all that, I thought.....but I think Hafler 500's sound every bit as good if not bettter. Can't wait to hear the PL with all the mods stomp the dogshit out of everyting I own..

Ok the Bryston got here last night. It is a good 250 WPC amp' It drives the K-horns a littler louder than the Spec, but the highs start start to distort pretty bad right before it clips, One feature is a soft clip. As it gets driven to clipping, the green Power LED's on the front turn to red, and gently roll off the levels.
Time to open er up and post some nudies.

Two large toroidal transformers, two separate power supplies.

So, do you have a final verdict on the Bryston yet? Soft clipping, big torridal transformers....what do you think of the sound before the onset of clipping? Is there proprietary stuff going on inside? Maybe you need a little longer to come to a final conclusion, but I bet you have an opinion of the amp...Let us Bryston owners down easy!! I'll bet the Phase Stomped the Dogs$!^ out of the Bryston?

Sutton, I was expecting the Bryston to put on a better show. Good build quality, damn nice layout inside, offset and bias was good. but it only tested at 264 just before clipping, the Spec's at 340, ande the "Monster" at 525. The weird thing is I had to bump the bass about 3db on the Spec 1 tone controls to sound like the others, don't know how significant that is to overall health of the amp, but like I said, for all I've heard about em the Spec should have been subject to dethroning, but it's not gonna happen with this amp.

In conclusion it might be unfair to compare this to the 2 I have as they're anything but stock!~! Would I keep this if I didn't have the others?? YEP!!
Sutton the sound is "different" from the other 2 but not objectionable, it's just that when the SPL's start getting to where I like em, the Bryston starts to run out of gas. There are some who will read this and say " FOR GOD"S SAKE MAN, YOU'RE DRIVING K-HORNS YOU SHOULDN't NEED MORE THAN THE BRYSTON" and in most cases that would be correct, and until you you've made over 500 CLEAN watts available to em [perhaps it is tough to imagine just how much power these speaks will take.

I do understand. And I agree. I think we probably have similar need for speed, or SPL's. Dives lots of people crazy, but I do like to listen to my music as it was intended to be heard.
