my 'puter dies just trying to open up emails !
wot hope have I got ? :confused2:
I'm sure your puter is capable of opening emails george, I think you have plenty of processes going on in the background though with your farm of puters. Do you ever get viruses?

I'm looking at some beautiful real-time rendered graphical demos on the PC synced to their own soundtracks. Have not done this in a while. Due to the real-time rendering done on the Cpu/Videocard this can draw up to 420 watts of power during complex scenes. This Nvidia GTX 680 graphic card sure has some grunt.
Are you generating these renderings? They're both way cool Derek and I see your system is being pushed a bit here from your screen capture. 54 degrees C is ok (still hot though) but 80 degrees is smokin'.

Thanks Nav =)

I didn't write the renderings/graphics, but yes the video card is rendering as I run them, its not a video, all real time generated.

I've seen video cards hit 100 celcius for a short time and still survive, it can burn the head pads a bit reducing cooling performance from there on leading to a dying card down the track. General rule of thumb I like to keep mine under 60 if possible (the manufacturer actually makes them run between 60-70 with auto fan control which I don't use), but if it hits 80 degrees (hardly ever does) that's when I back down as I want the card to last, it cost me nearly $800 some time ago.

I've totally lost the plot....
no viruses in the Mac world.
my macbook pro runs constantly at around 70-75 C, sometimes 80 C on a hot day.
my ibook (emailer) keeps losing it's screen all the time, but my imac works good.
i'm in the process of changing my emailer to another mac, but which one?
decisions, decisions.....

Maybe the integrated video chip on the ibook is getting so hot its starting to melt the solder off the pins therefore losing contact with the circuit board? Happens in PC laptops as well. Yeah I thought viruses were rare in the mac world, they do exist though but don't spread as easily. Hope you get that emailer sorted soon.

that's exactly wot happens, and i keep on resoldering 'em, only to have 'em let go again.
it's best to never turn it off to cool down, as that's when the joints crack.

heh heh heh.... no they don't.
no one has successfully designed one and let it loose on the mac community yet.
there are some anti-virus s/w companies who have claimed that they have successfully made one (or two), but that was just rumour mongering to get us mac users into a panic to buy their product.
it never eventuated.....

Thanks so much George, just fired up the amp while waiting for my sister and niece to arrive. Then going out for a family dinner tonight. Should keep me 'sane' for today, took a while to get going this morning.

Derek: I have friends staying over tonight through to Sunday, so I doubt I will have much internet time. I will have a glass of red wine on your behalf this evening. Cheers, buddy!

Well, it looks like I've got a case of being "homeless" soon......
It's been deemed by the powers that be, that my place is too cluttered, and either it goes or I do....
Life sucks!
