Luxman M-02 amplifier, the dumbest amplifier ever.

One of my post retirement gigs is doing repairs (amplifiers/receivers) at Stereo Lab in Columbus Ohio. Although the facility is relatively large, consoles take up a lot of space so I usually pick up the unit, fix it at home and drop it off when it's done. What's wrong with these photos...

    Transistor manuals

As one of my post retirement jobs, I'm doing repairs here and there for a local shop, Stereo Lab, In Columbus Ohio. Many years ago there were Japanese data manuals for semiconductors. One that is very beneficial for vintage gear is the Transistor Substitution Manual. The latest version I have...

Bias didoe on Marantz 4230 receiver

Most of the vintage receivers used a diode mounted on a heatsink as a bias regulator to prevent thermal runaway. I've got a Marantz 4230 quad receiver. The bias regulator diode has a broken lead. It's listed as M8513 in the parts list with a reference designator of H718 & H719. They used to...

    TO-66 transistor socket

I've got a Marantz 4230 (Quad receiver) on the bench. One channel blown. Has 2SC789 outputs (TO220 case) that is hardwired. Heatsink is drilled for a TO-66 device such as a 2N3054. Anybody know where to find a TO-66 socket?

    Butt Whuppin by PL 3300

The other day the wife was watching TV and I wanted to rock out. So I pulled out the Bose headphones and plugged them in. The right channel was white noise on top of the music even with the volume at minimum. The main out to the amps was dead quiet. I pulled the preamp out and off to the...

    Marantz 105 Lamp replacement

I picked up a Marantz 105 tuner recently. It needs all new lamps. What's the best way to access them? Remove the front panel? Go inside?

Oppinioins on LED for early 400

I'm working on an early 400 that has the fuse style incandescent lamps. I bought blue and warm white fuse style LEDs. The light winding on the transformer is only 6.7 VAC with a line voltage at 120 and the 8 volt LEDs were dim. I considered adding a few turns to the light winding on the...

    700II sub panel pem nuts.

I'm workin on a 700II and the 6-32 pem nuts are missing on the lefts ide of the sub panel. I bought some on EBAY and much to my chagrin the holes are stripped out and the pem nuts won't seat. Other than going to an 8-32 on one side is there any other options?

Got power line troubles? Prove it!

I've got 2 Dranetz 626 power line monitors that I'm tired of looking at. They're available to whoever wants them for the cost of shipping. They're about 25 years old. Worked the last time I turned them on which was about a year ago. You set up some parameters and they spit out numbers if the...

    Fan Panels

From time to time I pull fan panels out of the scrap barrel at my day job. Most of them hold 2 x 4" muffin fans. There are also 3 fan panels. The 2 fan panels sit nice behind 400's and 700's. If anybody wants one I'll ship them to a U.S. address for $10 which is the about the cost of...

    Bosch's system

I enjoy identifying vintage audio gear in movies and TV shows. I've watched all of the Bosch seasons on Amazon. Every once in a while there is a shot of his home music system. The system appears to be a McIntosh 240 amp and a McIntosh preamp, Marantz turntable, and Ohm Walsh speakers. Season...

    Soldering Irons

I have a few different , application specific, soldering irons on the bench. I'm thinking it's time to upgrade and consolidate. I'm looking at this one Pace Iron. This one features easy to change tips. No it's not chepa, but I want an niron that heats up fast and delivers the heat when...

    AGX 8 amp fuses

I'm running low on AGX8 fuses. Octopart showed Digikey had the best 100 pc price of about $0.50 each. Before pulling the trigger I tried EBAY and found a vendor that had 100 pcs for $18. Of course there is no telling if these are fakes as as the photo does not show a vendor name. Anyhow they...

    Free scopes & others

A friend recently closed his business and gave me a couple Tektronix 912 scopes. These are basic 2 channel scopes. They make a trace but they have issues, most likely capacitors. I have a Hitachi 222 scope that I loved for 30 years. I broke it out the yesterday intending to give it to a...

    400 Relay board conflicts

Referring to 400's, it has come to my attention that there is a conflict with the mounting of the relay board in conjunction with the White Oak back planes. The conflict involves the location of the decoupling caps on the back planes which must be bent to allow the relay board to be mounted...
