    I Hate Facebook!

Facebook is a tool. What you choose to make of it us entirely up to you. It can be useful for socializing, reconnecting, staying connecting, staying informed, and so on. It can also be a tool used to turn you INTO a tool. Think the proliferation of "selfies" and "selfie sticks". As for data...

    Quantegy 499 1/4" x 1200' sealed tape question

Unless that area happened to be zero percent humidity the entire time, would still make no difference vís-a-vís sticky shed. If they had the defective binders, they'll still develop the condition. It just might've taken longer or not been as severe. Entirely possible. There ya go. I have a...

    Quantegy 499 1/4" x 1200' sealed tape question

This is an old roll of 642 I have laying around. This what I'm 99% certain the reel inside that roll of 499 will look like. Second picture shows the date code sticker I was referring to. This specimen was made in 2004.

    Quantegy 499 1/4" x 1200' sealed tape question

Sticker must've been removed then. But that's ok. Judging from the box and packaging style, that's definitely an early version that dates from about '95 or '96. I'd say crack it open. You have nothing to lose.

    Quantegy 499 1/4" x 1200' sealed tape question

Oh it's a good tape. But the Ampex version is known to be SSS. The Quantegy ones, not so. But it's a 50/50 possibility that the one you got, which was basically during the transitory period may have it. If you open it up and it doesn't have SSS, you are free and clear to tape away. And it will...

    Quantegy 499 1/4" x 1200' sealed tape question

I'm not aware of Quantegy or Ampex ever having made 7" metal reels, so it's highly unlikely you'll have one in a 7" box. I can almost guarantee you it will be a two-spoke plastic reel. The difference between Ampex and Quantegy is date of manufacture. When Ampex and 3M's magnetic media divisions...

A Good Day For A Scotch And A Coke

I've done many picture essays over the years. You mean someone actually wants to see one? I did one here at PHX for LPR35 tape and no one seemed interested in it.

Trying Out Some PYRAL LPR-35 Tape

I sure hope so. I really don't want to go through that fiasco again. I really do want this stuff to hang on for awhile.

Trying Out Some PYRAL LPR-35 Tape

My faith in the then new RMGI LPR-35 tape was shattered when after just a few years, the tape literally began to disintegrate. I became disillusioned with it and became highly averse to it for a few years. I was initially very impressed with this tape and had very high hopes for it. But those...

    A Quote A Day *unless I forget...

Details matter. Sometimes it's the little things that can make all the difference in the world. It's also those very same details (or the lack of them) that can very easily be manipulated into misleading your audience into drawing false or incomplete conclusions. Take the following...

Would You Support An ATR Tape For Hobbyists?

How cool would this be? A few years ago, I lobbied hard for ATR to make a 1.0 mil "Classic" tape to complement (not replace) their existing "Master" tape as an effort to be a little more inclusive to us home hobbyists who prefer the long play tapes but also want ATR quality. PYRAL LPR-35...

Oil on the (downward slide) upward climb...

Bio is of questionable integrity as a product. Many cities and municipalities won't touch it for their fleet vehicles as there have been several verified instances of it ruining fuel lines and even entire engines, since its origins are kind of murky. The real scam however is that many unbranded...

Cap & Trade...and RD99 biodiesel.... the two biggest scams going right now not counting crude and gas paper contracts.

Oil on the (downward slide) upward climb...

Although the XOM refinery is back on line, production is very limited and thus they are very tightly allocating their supply. It's been a huge PITA for me for several weeks. The other refiners (Tesoro, Valero, etc) have more than picked up the slack and there is not only not a shortage of supply...

    Someone Scored Off Me

You know...every once in awhile, it's nice to spread a little sunshine and make someones day. Take this ancient, well worn Ikea reclining chair and footrest. I bought it when I was still single. It served its purpose well. But I've had it for way too long and I've more than gotten my moneys...
