Where can you find "How to do preventive Maintenance on a Pioneer 701-RT Reel to Reel?

To answer the question put, the maintenance of deck is not usually given in any manual and it is a knowledge of the Technician who has many years of experience with decks that knows what needs to be addessed. There are some things in decks that can be assumed to be bad at this age like...

Thinking of taking the plunge into reel to reel... advice?

The Pioneer RT-707 is an excellent choice. They can have some issues but overall it is a pretty solid little deck but no 10.5" reels can be used. You can not beat a direct drive motor!

Thinking of taking the plunge into reel to reel... advice?

The A3300 is a good deck but to be honest I have had to change too many slide switches in the transport and I suggest a minimum model of the A3300S or SX or SR. This way you will get a model higher up than the slide switch model. That part was discontinued back in 1987.

Thinking of taking the plunge into reel to reel... advice?

I say don't buy old junk and also stuff that looks good but has junk design inside. I told a trainee about the Teac A6300 and even though he has BR20 and Otari decks he now has 4 A6300 decks. I wonder if I got through? Maybe some other people should listen so well. I would not be surprised if...

    Who'd a thunk it ?

I advise being careful when evaluation such a thing. There is a certain large country that makes it a habit to rip off people all the time with the junk they make- the Ion tape deck is one example the Crosley is another piece of junk. If you want a device you pay money for and is good for the...

Where can you find "How to do preventive Maintenance on a Pioneer 701-RT Reel to Reel?

Even when the spice block is not missing you are most the time going to have to correct the adjustments in there as idiots that see adjustment just have to turn them and make things better all the time NOT having a Tentelometer which is what is needed to do these adjustments. I have had very few...

What are you going to lub? Tension rollers are things that might need it and perhaps a oiling of the capstan motor sleeve bearing but that will need to take the motor apart to do it right- one drop of oil at the front usually does nothing for you as the bearings have a void inside that prevents...

Just checking if anyone knows what Bias Maxell UD 35-180 Tape is?

On decks of age and with 400 hours or more on the heads there will be no correct setting as all the original specs will have changed. Not to mention some of those machines were built for Scotch 203 which was horrible tape by today's standards so the record eq needs to be cut down by capacitor...

Running 'Old Faithful' through the ATS-1 ...

Why should you care about Flux Density on a tape deck? Well you don't have to the Technician who sets up your deck needs to care. Once you have a well adjusted machine back from a shop it should be ready to use. The sad fact is that even some places that charge a lot to work on a machine do a...

Running 'Old Faithful' through the ATS-1 ...

The flux density of the operating level is the standard your deck is set up for and you can not use the wrong one. Teac uses a Dolby MTT150 tape that is 200nWb/M flux density and on VU meters it is +3Vu and on Peak meters it is 0 dB. People that go and use random levels and I have caught some so...

    Welcome Tapeheads!

I was thinking of dumping it too but you need to take the good with the bad and so this new FB page is more good than bad right now. If you are only into amps like PL then you are in the right place but tape decks is another place.

Unfortunately It is Time To Report

Well the damage goes on from a guy in SC and he breaks the Timer switch and knob both. I glued the knob but the switch was replaced with a reel size switch which I had plenty of. Hey there is a new FB place to visit called Reel to Reel Clinic...

    Welcome Tapeheads!

Well having enough aggravation from both TH and AK I decided to not do much with any of those so I was talking to a past client Engineer and he made this new Facebook page and all are welcome to join and we will have the answers you need outside of any requirement to advertise. AK deleted some...

What type grease for tape deck?

I was surprised to see wsuch a thing but show what extent the show went to to try and be authentic. I found it to be enjoyable to watch but reminds me of high school kid behavior a lot of time.

Anybody Ever Heard of an Infinity Swamp Amp?

I thought it was one of those You Tube amps that the guy digs out of the swamp sprays it with the hose and then lets it dry then plugs it in.

What type grease for tape deck?

That makes sense but I also saw it in a episode of Black Sheep Squadron where they had a barrel of it but may not have been 105 then. I can't imagine they put the name in for authenticity unless it was in use then.

Open-Reel Tape Experiences -The Good & Bad

The term Common Sense has left this nation with the selection of the wrong President. People tell me there is no more common sense and one example is buying used tape that cost more than the better new tape. If the new tape would not be better than XL I when I do machines I would be back to XL I...

Open-Reel Tape Experiences -The Good & Bad

Most NPN or 2SC or 2SD transistors can be replaced with KSC1845 which is a great transistor (low noise) up to 50mA but after that I use KSD1616A for subs that can go to 1 Amp. There are common transistors I have found that can be stocked and used in repairs but some like the KSC1845 only good...

Open-Reel Tape Experiences -The Good & Bad

If you compare Maxell XL I to The Capture I bet the XL I would beat it. We left XL I for the standard 1 mil some time ago maybe right after the 2000.

Open-Reel Tape Experiences -The Good & Bad

Hi Ron, The 765 and 766 were some of the best they made so getting rid of good stuff and staying with lesser product is backwards. I have worked on 755 and I am not so much thinking that it is a bad unit either. The Auto reverse stuff can be fixed but the reversing stuff they use needs to be...
