PL 700B WhiteOak-which mods to do?

There were several makers of the PL700B meters. It seems to me that Jewell was the most common, followed by Honeywell and Dixson. I spoke with an engineer at Jewell Instruments in Manchester, NH about a year ago and although he was sympathetic to our dilemma, he said that Jewell had no "upside...

Your opinion on Fuse speaker location

Ah, the dreaded "Flame Linear" or "Blaze Linear". I am so glad those days are behind us. I have often thought, what if Phase Linear had been able to figure out what the problem was with their Control Boards? Would Phase Linear still be in business?

Your opinion on Fuse speaker location

Gib, my understanding is that a fried output will open the corresponding Rail Fuse, and possibly invoke the protection circuit. Did you ever actually blow and replace the speaker fuses? You are correct, this formula is found on Page 5 of the updated Phase Linear 700 700B Service Manual dated...

Your opinion on Fuse speaker location

You don't have to be drunk or stupid to turn your system up to Mach 10, eh Lee?

A strong one. I think Lee had one that was +/- 108VDC.

Your opinion on Fuse speaker location

Not even close. Most of us here understand physics and Ohms Law. A proper fuse (one that will not open when it gets loud) will not interrupt quickly enough to prevent catastrophic damage to "most" speakers. There are exceptions such as JBL or Altec Professional Sound Reinforcement and others...

    Sound differences between

About 40 years... You may not be able to HEAR the difference, but the benefits of increased Safe Operating Area and other specs make the purchase of these devices a no-brainer, as Lee said above. And, they are not even expensive. The ONSEMI MJ21195/MJ21196 output transistors are far superior to...

    Time and Space

But, how do we know what was, when there was no one to know? And, why do we care to speculate? The present universe could be the inside of a shoebox sitting on an infinite shelf of space-time continuum... The people who ponder such things should get a real job and improve society and culture...

Putting in 96's into an old 700B

Yes, indeed my Thick/Thin rating was arbitrary and only related to capacitive coupling by virtue of separation thickness, not in any way qualitative. The variation in thickness materials was interesting. Only the mica varied from piece to piece, the others were consistently uniform in thickness.

Lee is a good source for the odd Phase Linear part. Over time, you will have your own collection of NLA parts.

Putting in 96's into an old 700B

    I measured the insulators I have on hand with the Mitutoyo 293-765 (.00005") digital micrometer, Thickest (best) to Thinnest (worse): Green Sil-Pad - .01230" Bergquist Gray Sil-Pad - .00925" Pink Sil-Pad - .00925" Brand X Gray Sil-Pad - .00765" Amber Kapton Pad - .00510" Mica - .00225" to .00415"

    700 Series II Build

I believe Phase Linear used a strand of 31 AWG (0.0089"/.226mm) tin-plated copper wire. The chart says this is good for 0.7 Amp.

He hears the distortion but the sine wave trace is good? Hmmm. I told him to upgrade to White Oak Audio components.

Nice reflection of you in the last photo. It feels good when you get a long term project finished (or close to finished). You have a nice scope for audio testing!

    e-REX engine

Likely this engine has very little torque and a narrow powerband. You need torque to move a vehicle from a standstill. Some torque comes from the inertia of a flywheel, but every vehicle needs a gearbox to match engine speed to vehicle speed. The gearbox is also a torque multiplier but if you...
