Too bad they uses this engine to drive a generator, then charge batteries, then power up an electric motor to finally drive the wheels rather than just use a clutch and gearbox.

Likely this engine has very little torque and a narrow powerband. You need torque to move a vehicle from a standstill. Some torque comes from the inertia of a flywheel, but every vehicle needs a gearbox to match engine speed to vehicle speed. The gearbox is also a torque multiplier but if you have very little torque to begin with, the gearbox is not much help.

This engine might be a better complement to a constant speed generator that requires very little torque once it is up to optimum electrical production RPMs.

Can’t watch video rn limited connection but it must have a scavenge blower or forced induction of some sorts. Opposed piston in old tech, this is kinda interesting variation. Seen something similar using a swash plate. I’ve worked on Fairbanks Morse opposed diesels, they were pretty retesting, designed for US navy subs. Also check out the British “deltic diesel”. That’s a marvel...

Opposed cylinder twin crank used for drones too.

The variable compression is a novel idea however.
