Interestingly, a PL700 over temp condition does not remove all power from the amplifier as it does in the PL700B and PL700II. This is because there is still a path for a small current to flow in the circuit of R72 (4.7K or 3.6K in Eric's amp) and the NE-2 lamp, which are parallel to the over...

Phase Linear 400 Series 2 Power Transistors

I explained to him in a PM that the F means Fairchild Corp. All the outputs are relabeled by Phase Linear to read PL909 and the 914 and 910 are date codes 9=1979 and 10 and 14 are weeks of manufacture. I believe this is true because we used Fairchild semiconductors in the Navy.

Did you make any measurements on the transformer? I wonder if it is wound similar to the PL700B?

Phase Linear 400 Series 2 Power Transistors

In my humble opinion, the RCA 410 or RCA 66546 (they are the same devices) driver transistors are the best for that application. Others may have a different opinion. I have some if you need them. (Lee is faster on the keyboard than I am.)

Phase Linear 400 Series 2 Power Transistors

Your PL400 Series 2 is a middle release version, likely 1979 or early 1980. The PL400 Series 2 was released in 1978 and you could still buy one new in 1981 for $800.00. If your amplifier has PL909 Output Transistors it is wired for quasi-complementary operation. The current replacement for...

    PL400 Series 2 problems...maybe

You don't. But insurance companies will hire a $50,000 arson investigator to save a $150,000 homeowner's claim. My stepfather was in the insurance business and explained to me that he has seen too many people become homeless with no money just for things people take for granted or don't worry...

    PL400 Series 2 problems...maybe

No one does, until it happens... When the original control board fails and the amp latches up and sends 80VDC to a nice big speaker and the woofer voice coil melts and catches the cone on fire, then the drapes... Then the insurance company reads the Fire Marshal's report about the fire starting...

    PL400 Series 2 problems...maybe

Another opinion (everyone has one): You will often spend an inordinate amount of time (time is money) chasing problems on an original Phase Linear control board. Then get frustrated with lifted solder traces, burned board, broken wires, ordering new parts, etc. Ask me how I know... Sometimes it...

Yup, some customers just don't get it and will never experience the joy of WOPL, like we do every day.

    PL400 Series 2 problems...maybe

Your friend's amplifier has tired Bias Transistors. These are 2N3403 devices affixed to the inside back of the chassis and are use to vary the Bias voltage of the amplifier by using the heat characteristics of a transistor. This keeps the amplifier from "thermal runaway", rather, just inaccurate...

Phase Linear 2000 PREAMPLIFIER SUPER UPGRADE AND REPAIR

All 120V electrical appliances in the USA are IEC Class 1 (basic insulation), or Class II (double insulation) like a plastic 1/4" drill housing.* Per the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), "A safety ground is required for all Class I devices." This requirement did not exist when...

    PL400 Series 2 problems...maybe

These Phase Linear amplifiers are designed to be switched on with at least 117VAC. We only use the Variac as a testing device when the status of the amplifier is unknown or it has been many years since the amplifier has been turned on. The "Turn On voltage" is not a specified value and could be...
