    Early PL400 Time to Upgrade

When the Phase Linear 400 series 1 amp was first being developed by Bob Carver in late 1971 it was handed off to Terry Phillips to put into production. It has been many years since I last talked to Terry. Terry also worked for Boeing like I did and he bounced back and forth between the Seattle...

Here is a link to an archived copy of the modifications that James VanDyke did to a Phase Linear 1000: https://web.archive.org/web/20190205224945/http://home.onemain.com/~jvandyke/id9.html I spoke to James a while ago. He was also close friends with a former Phase Linear employee and was able...

I am just completing the restoration of a 1000 series 1 that I have. There are approximately (81) electrolytic capacitors that I replaced with newer Nichicon's. The next steps will be to perform the test procedure steps in the 1000 series 1 service manual. However, it does not list all the...

    Early PL400 Time to Upgrade

Phase Linear used a variety of revisions of the PL400C pc boards before they started using the PL14 series of pc boards in 400 series 1 amps. I have (5) examples of the versions of the PL400C. In the attached photos below are (2) early versions with no notation on the backside of the pc board...

PL 700 II Clair Bros Rising from the Ashes

The switch that you have in the photo does not appear to be any switch I've ever seen in a Phase Linear amp. It also looks like the hole diameter in the 700 may have been enlarged to accept a replacement switch which is something I often see.

PL 700 II Clair Bros Rising from the Ashes

Glen, It is a simple question. You already performed the measurement. So you should already know the answers. I'm not asking you to go back and perform any further measurements. What frequency or range of frequencies (i.e. 20Hz to 20KHz) and output level did you use? Are the results noted...

    PL 200 Help Please!

I edited my previous post to include the following sentences in italics. .......The amplifier will not clip symmetrically when driving a 4 ohm load! As a matter of fact one side of the sine wave will clip far earlier than the other side. (It has been a while but I can't remember if it was the...

PL 700 II Clair Bros Rising from the Ashes

Glen Pardon me for the following ramblings..... just putting some thoughts down... Since you are posting incomplete specs, I thought I would ask you to elaborate further. Otherwise they are meaningless. As an example: THD+N in unweighted setting left .01% Right .04% What does this mean...

PL 700 II Clair Bros Rising from the Ashes

Glen, At what frequency was the THD+N numbers taken at? Let me guess (1kHz). How about rated output at 20kHz? What was the duration of test when you did the THD measurement? You mention that it does 465 watts into a 7.3 ohm load single channel driven. At what frequency and THD+N? Did you test...

    PL 200 Help Please!

bobdod, I have resisted posting for as long as I could. Unfortunately, the Phase Linear 200 series 1 amplifier is the worst/most unreliable amplifier Phase Linear ever made. I say this for many reasons. I will not list them all here. I hope you don't intend on using this amplifier to drive...

Tall order, sounds like a pain

If my memory serves me correct.......... Most Phase Linear series two consumer products had a front panel with rounded corners. As an option, they were available with a "rack front panel" which had square corners. I am not sure if they had to be ordered with the optional rack front panel at the...

WOPL 700B Has more output on the left channel.

"Ruth" is more than likely Ruth Anderson. The only Ruth I know of that worked at Phase Linear. If the output stage has been replaced with White Oak Audio backplane boards then you might consider removing the sticker since there are no longer any traces of the work that she did.
