Comparing battery-powered phono pre-amps, from RS ($$) to ASR ($$$$) ... and beyond!

Here's a likely replacement for the C1740 transistors, (BC237B) datasheet seems very close to the original. BC237B PBFREE Central Semiconductor | Mouser Australia Here is the datasheet for the original C1740 transistor:

Comparing battery-powered phono pre-amps, from RS ($$) to ASR ($$$$) ... and beyond!

I am going to keep the original form factor/metal box, I like the size and the metal provides good shielding. Gold plated RCA jacks are also in the pipeline. Spent some time listing and checking components. Plus checking resistor color codes against the schematic 3D posted, and learning which...

Comparing battery-powered phono pre-amps, from RS ($$) to ASR ($$$$) ... and beyond!

I know they give a rating on the schematic for resistors, but what voltage or watts are they?

Comparing battery-powered phono pre-amps, from RS ($$) to ASR ($$$$) ... and beyond!

Ok, so far cap grade can be improved and power cap boosted. I assume 2SC1740 can be replaced with the low noise version. What about the brown looking cap things in C9 and C12? (47pf), what voltage are they? Can they be replaced with Wima Caps? I might just have some. In terms of resistors...

Comparing battery-powered phono pre-amps, from RS ($$) to ASR ($$$$) ... and beyond!

Good advice, thanks Lee. When I order high end caps, will stick to original values except the power cap which has been boosted from 100uf to 470uf. Always Learning!

I was going for a big *BOOM* Seriously, it was a case of not knowing what I was doing and hey, lets throw these in and see what happens, lucky it still worked eh?

Comparing battery-powered phono pre-amps, from RS ($$) to ASR ($$$$) ... and beyond!

I decided to beef up the capacitors in the Rat Shack Pre. Used whatever was in stock from previous projects, nothing too exotic but better than average caps, mainly panasonic. Not really knowing what I was doing here are the changes: C11 25v/100uf to 16v/470uf (the Rat shack pre that 3D got has...

    iPhone and PL700B

Amazing setup, I like the power centers, assuming they are power conditioners/distributors. I'm sure you have some dedicated circuits going into the house too.

Comparing battery-powered phono pre-amps, from RS ($$) to ASR ($$$$) ... and beyond!

Some good ideas there, will place an order with mouser once we figure out what to change. Work has been the priority for me lately.

Comparing battery-powered phono pre-amps, from RS ($$) to ASR ($$$$) ... and beyond!

Ok, here it is, the board on the left is the one I have sourced in Australia, the board on the right is the rat shack one that 3D sourced.

    Sansui SC 5300

If you want unmatched fidelity and longevity on the heads, the bx300 is the goods. Crystalloy heads are hard to beat. Edit: I say this because i dont have the money to buy exotic decks like revox, tandberg etc Not sure where they stand in terms of head sound quality

    Sick Clair 700 Series II

Speaking of bonehead, this guy watched the video of initial power up of the wopl just after I attached the transformer. He said I was a brave soul for doing it without a variac or dbt. He didnt know you tested the amp before sending it to me.

    Gasoline prices Skyrocketing!

How many of you in areas with snow use a heater on your car so it can be started in the morning? This is unheard of in Australia.
