Million Dollar Speakers?
CV's upgraded to the tune of $1250... I will let him explain what was done but I think he's getting raped a bit, especially since the upgrader has had them for almost a year. You guys would know better about the upgrades then me though

If your talking refoam a crossover work, that's a bit much, CV whats?

I don't think Jason will mind me posting his PM to me discussing it, I will leave out the upgraders name though

"I dropped off a pair of cerwin dx-7s to him and told him to make them sound like a million bucks. Well he called and there done 1250$ I was like Whoa .. I guess he switched out tweeters rebuilt midrange speakers somehow, completely built new crossovers with clarity caps, ran a transmission line, somehow adjusted woofers to right curve ,got rid of old binding posts and put on new ones"

Still seems mighty expensive to me

I am just wondering why a great woofer would need to be "recurved". Just out of curiosity, how do you recurve a woofer (I am assuming this has to do with matching to the crossover????) Mids are fine in the Vega's, why would they need to be rebuilt? The tweets can be a little harsh so I can understand that... I looked up Clarity caps and they seems pretty inexpensive overall. Again, I know shit about this stuff but I am concerned a good friend is getting taken advantage of. Even if labor rate is high, how much time is really needed soldering in a few caps? Binding posts??? Why? The stock ones are fine

Pretty much what you read was what I was told. This guy builds his own pairs of speakers that range between 2 to 5 grand. On his he uses wood coned woofers. But I guess they didn't sound right in place of my midrange. So I guess he took the midrange apart and rebuilt the speaker. When I took them there I had just had the 12s refoamed. So I know that just the set of tweeters he used were 250$ a pair. Plus he said the crossovers were total junk so he made his own crossovers. He said that now they sound close to his except with the punch of a 12 where on his speakers he uses either 1 or 2 5 1/4 inch and the tweeters. So basically what I gather is brand new built crossovers with clarity caps, new tweeters, rebuilt mids, and adjusted woofers, and new binding post. So what it comes down to I guess is if these sound at all like his amazing ass speakers then it is way worth it. But if they still sound at all like cerwins I've been had I guess lol. You guys know everything I do at this point. So what do ya think ???

Yup, I believe Jason has been taken. This guy needs to be exposed as to who and what he is.

This shit happens though, I have a well know and reputable guy (or was) that refoamed my Alon woofers and did them wrong. That took several weeks. I sent them back and now about 7 months later I have a hard time reaching him and wonder if I'll ever get them back. I should have just sent them to Carl (guy that designed and built them) but he wanted $400 plus shipping. It was only foam from what could be seen but non of the money was refundable even if it was just foam. Thing that really shocked me is I'd had several speakers done by Ken in the past with no issue.

In an event to call out the speaker repair bums maybe we should start a WARNING! thread.

Mine is Ken at Upland Loudspeaker Repair in Upland, CA.

What tweeters did he put in Jason??? I could have sent you a pair of EMIT's for dirt cheap, they are tough to beat and are considered some of the sweetest sounding out there. Hell, even a set of Peerless would kickass

I will let others chime in, I just hope you got your money's worth Brother

That's a bit "much"... I did my D9's awhile back, a few pics so you can get an idea of what's involved...

http://forums.phxaudiotape.com/showthread.php/3852-D9-Crossover-Redo

Didn't like the sound of the Daytons so I went back, but hey... I think parts for it were around 120.00 and it took me just a few hours to do (then another few to undo.. heheh). I might try some other caps again in the future, but anyway...

You guys keep talking about CV's and I might just get the courage up to go nab another pair of D9's 40 miles from me.... My ears wouldn't take it tho.. :happy7:

I will know soon enough lol like I said if these sound like his at all then they will be worth it. His hands down were the badest ass speakers I've ever heard. They wil walk all over any paridim or b@w or klipsh any of them. But can he transform a cerwin into that is what is to be seen lmfao. At this point all I can do is look for loose change and keep my fingers crossed. So time to hit the hoot and pray lmfao

It just makes me mad the guy did not even give Jason some idea what the final cost would be, it should have been discussed what mod's would be done, the factual benefits and Jason should have had the final decision on what would be done to fit his budget. This is like dropping off your car at the garage for a sparkplug change and getting smacked with a bill for a bunch of other stuff and if you don't pay, they can slap a mechanics lien on the vehicle, pretty shitty if you ask me

That's partially my fault for not following up I guess. Just trying to make myself fell better lol. If I get there and they suck I will get my 300$ back and walk away!! I've got plenty of speakers so if need be I will be 1 set short lol

How is not following up on your part your fault? He's the one doing the work. Jer, Lee and anybody else here would not assume you have given them carte blanc with costs without discussing what they have planned first. It's called integrity AND customer service
