Yeah, we'd need Lee or Joe to confirm numbers on the 700, but I thought Lee had stated around 1000 or 1100 for the 700. If my old Bose tech's statement is true the stock 1801 is comparable to a WOPL 700.

I believe what the tech had said was true, as my 1801's walk all over my 800 watt pro amp.
I have found most "Pro" amps don't live up to their rating in RMS. I have a 600w Pro amp in the garage and the WOPL slays it. The pro amp also runs so damn hot when it's cranked that the wife made me stop using it because it smelled like it was catching on fire LOL

Just out of curiosity, what did you tech do to effectively double your Bose amp's stock output rating??? I just don't see that as possible without a major rework of everything. Lee and the guys are only squeezing an extra 150w or so out of the 700s and the full comp 400's are getting about 115w's extra, I see no doubling of power despite superior components

Are you getting your 4ohm ratings confused with standard 8ohms??? I admit, I am a bit confused but then again, I don't know much about the Bose amps

He didnt do any upgrades as far as i know. He simply rebuilt a blown channel. This was about 15 years ago before info was available on the net like it is now. His results were from his bench test after the rebuild. He claimed it was 500wpc a 4 ohm from his test.

Stereo and HIFI times Winter issue 1974 also states that the amp can deliver 425wpc a 4ohm.

I love the way they look on the inside. That's when amps were amps, I think the 70s was the era of the coolest looking equipment, not only sounding good but the huge intimidation factor! I look at Dennis' and Lee's walls of power and drool!

They do look sweet on the inside. And IMO they look fabulous on the outside. The intimidation factor of the amp is great. Its full wrap on the sides and back of heat sinks always appealed to me. The selectable L.E.D. and Meter combo looks great on the front. I wish someone would come up with a light package for these things as the meter lights on pretty much all of them suffer the dimming illness after long periods of running.

Can't you use a LED strip? Sort of like what is used for the PL's???

Dont know. I dont mess with these things. Im sure something could be done, but knowing whats in it and where to go from the existing setup would need some evaluation.

Wow, dude. This is incredibly cool.

How many/ who are the sponsors of this, if that's not proprietary information?

Ben and Ron...... Rail voltage has more influence on the WPC's than anything. Joes boards do add a little gain. I do not doubt the Bose quoted numbers. The were built quite robustly , and very conservatively rated. And we have the tech's de-liar in hand now the AP. I'd love to run all our amps through it as when the AP is done with em I don't know if that leaves much to argue about, the analyzer is that good.

On a WOPL at 4 ohms, Gibsonian requested of me to find out on one of the builds where I was changing out everything, so I attempted that, could not keep fuses in it over 736 watts into 4 with both loaded and driven. The manual says for sine wave testing to keep 8 amp rail fuses in....THAT I HAVE NOT TRIED YET> That 736 figure was with 5amp fuses oonly. My impressionb at the time was that there was quite a bit to go yet. When a guy test amps to destruction sometimes as I do ya get a feelin about when they are close to going they get some funny squeals and groans, if I had to guess when it blew fuses at 736 there was still another 100 to get.,

Another thing I have not done is test max out on a 400 at 4 ohms either. Max testing at 4 ohms is where you find oiut what kind of power supply you have.....

That's some serious power Lee. Was that a 700 or a 400?

I found this, http://audiolalies.blogspot.fr/2013/05/amplificateur-bose-1801.html. Its Thierry's blog. Not sure if those are stock numbers or if its after his revisions.
Those look pretty stock, mirrors my figures on another 250WPC, the Spec 2 tops out at 335 with 90 volts rail voltage and only 3 pairs of 2SD555/2SB600 TO-3's per channel. That in itself is pretty impressive, which explains the Spec's numerous and sometimes unwieldy protection systems....Cause they are getting all the goody those are capable of...

The 400 FC's use 5 pairs of 21195/96's perside.

If PS is as robust as the 700 then 500w or better per channel seems a reasonable figure for the full comp version eh?

If the power supply is adequate, going to 4 ohms from 8 should double the wattage.

So the full comp you tested ran 315 @ 8 ohms, that would mean 1200+ out of a 400 @ 4 ohms :tongue1:

A full comp 700 would be godly at 2000w

Jesus...

I don't think the 400 power supply is capable of that. What I know for sure is a stock 700 with a neutral tranny(100+/-DC rails) will do 736 per and up. With a hot tranny god only knows.

Now remember these are the absolute max ratings, I would not advertise them as continous. For that to happen we would have to add a few more outputs per side and 2-3 times mire heat sinking WITH FORCED AIR COOLING.

Ed was telling me that Claire Bors would special order 700 Pros to their specificalions cause they were clipping the F*&^%$# every night all night into 4 ohm S-4 packages. Electronically crossed with 1 amp for two drivers. The Zoebel network had to consist of special Dale heatsinked 5 ohm 20 watt finned power resistors, compared to the stock 10 ohm 2 watters. The stock zoebels would explode in less that 5 minutes.
