Hey Nando, all the MD's sent to you and John both, are full of music. He had used some long playing format for most all his recordings. The sound quality is not all that great, although there are some good tunes throughout. I doubt I personally will save much due to the quality of the recordings.

When purchasing the MD's the fellow had tried explaining to me that I would not be able to hear a difference from one record mode to another. That might hold true if I were just listening on the go with a portable, but compared to the MD's i make, the sound is lacking.

With all that said, I looked online to see if the post office was open today, and apparently it is. I should have both parcels in the mail today guys.

Thanks guys.

Interesting. If there is music I want to keep, I may record those tracks onto another MD. I've been quite successful, with a little sonic manipulation using my analog processors, improving the sound to my liking.

Right Nando. Im certain you could make these recordings sound better than they do.

I think youll enjoy many of the bands on these discs Nando. There is a lot of prog rock, rock, blues, jazz, and other stuff. Consisting of bands like Roger Waters, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, Ozric Tentacles, Porcupine Tree, Grateful Dead, Mannfred Mann, to name a few. Many of the discs carry folders holding numerous titles from each artist. There is a lot of music to go through.

One other note for both of you. There were those plastic Sony 6 pack MD holders included with the buy. There was 3, I wanted to send each of you one. I could not fit the 6 pack cases into the boxes. Both of you will receive 6 discs with no cases. If either of you would like 1 let me know and ill send them off in a bubble mailer at another time.

Ben: I will have some fun sorting out tunes, then. Thanks for offering up the Sony 6-pack case. It may not be worth it to ship it, however. Perhaps, with our next MD exchange I would consider it.

Thanks for the discs Ben, I received them today. Good thing I have a few portables that can play and record/erase these discs as non of my home decks can. I haven't figured out whether he recorded on a portable with atrac type R and used MLDP lengths? While the music selection on the discs I received is great the sound quality doesn't seem to be top notch. So I may just dub them to cd-r or to mp3 and record over them.

It looks like he used MDLP lp2 and lp4 modes because some of the disc have well over 100 minutes of material, which may explain the sound quality. I found one that has over 300 minutes of material on it. To get that much data you are limited to 66 kbit/s so it would be similar to a 64 kbit mp3.

Hey John, glad you received the disc's.

As I mentioned, my Pioneer deck could not erase disc's recorded in newer formats. Sound quality is lacking on most recordings. Although, I find the recordings he made himself sound not all that bad. I agree though many of the MD's I kept were recorded in extremely long formats. The MJ-D707 only records and plays SP and LP format. Pretty old from my understanding.

Hopefully Nando has a deck that can wipe them as well. He should have his MD's early next week.

I am sure my Sony home deck will be able to record over any of the MiniDiscs I want to use for future mixes/Masters. I haven't put many hours on my Pioneer Elite MD deck which is the same model as Ben's non-Elite deck.

Ben: A Pioneer MJ-D707 with 28 sealed MiniDiscs is on our craigslist for $200: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pml/ele/4080131147.html

Hey not to poop on the thread, but...

I dusted off my old Sony MDS-JE320. Didn't have to mess with the dreaded fake eject issue... she's working!

Might be interested in some MD swaparoos now... :thumbright:

(carry on... hehe)

The bad news for me is my portable play/rec MD Decks wont erase the MDLP discs I got from Ben. :banghead: The good news is my Yamaha Home deck erases em just fine and it isn't even a MDLP unit. :laughing9: Go figure. I'll have to dig out my Sony home Decks and see if they are up to erasing the discs?

Jers alive! Good to see you buddy. :p

A little more experimentation and all my home decks will erase the MDLP discs, they just cannot read or write to them.

200 seems a little high for that deck. As I mentioned it only plays and records in the earlier MD formats, and the deck itself was made around 98/99. I only paid 60 dollars for my deck, and the guy threw in a handful of used MD's. While I really like the deck, I dont think I would pay that much for it. Now if it was one of those sweet Sony decks like Pat has, with the keyboard input, then maybe i'd go as high as 200.

On another note, Shadowlord(Christian) from TH has converted one of these decks in a functioning computer/media player utilizing the buttons on the front. Pretty nice job he had done to it. I believe you can see it on his website.

Thats interesting John. My deck will erase the content of each track, but will not erase the TOC, thus not allowing it record on the disc until the TOC has been erased. Fortunately my Sony Net MD takes care of these no problem.

Are you selecting erase all? I selected erase all tracks and then when I eject the mini disc the deck updates the TOC. I then put the disc back into the deck and was able to record new tracks.

Yep. Even using erase all. As I mentioned even after the TOC update, when you pop the disc in it still shows the old TOC. At least with any of the disc's I had previously made on the Net MD. I didnt bother to try with these disc's, simply went to the portable to erase.

I noticed this a while back with a disc I tried to erase to re use. It had been made on the portable. After erasing it still showed the 4 songs with no music. The TOC wouldnt go away. I tried to record on the disc with the original TOC present and it kept coming back as a corrupted disc. Decided to try a format on the portable and the disc worked fine in the home deck afterwards.

Seventy-Five MDs of Surprises

Today, I received my parcel at the post office from Ben. Thank you for going to all the work of sending these MDs out to me. There are some very good titles in the music I received. And lots of it is new stuff for me, or albums I don't have by artists and bands I like. The first one I picked out from the top of the neatly stacked MDs was from a group Ozrik Tentacles. This one was recorded at the slowest speed of LP4 Stereo with almost 300 minutes of music on it. I think part of the problem with the quality of the recording is that it was recorded way too hot at 0dB. My recordings are usually peaking around -6dB to -4dB. I don't come anywhere close to triggering the Overload signal. I can fix that by loading the MD into the deck and reducing the Scale Factor, retroactively, on all the songs I wish to keep. Oh, and guys, just like cassette tapes there is an equivalent to the erasure prevention tab, called the record-protect slider on the edge of the MiniDisc. If you get the prompts "C11" or "Protected," slide the tab on the MD case in the opposite direction and try accessing the MD editing functions.

Today, I tried my portable Sony MZ-N510CK through my downstairs system. That way, I can listen while I type away at the desktop computer, while on the forum.

Once again, I appreciate your kind offer in announcing this through the forum, Ben!
