Some Interesting Tape Variants I picked up for 50 cents each from the recycling market. Have quite a few strange variants that I should dedicate a thread to, but recording is taking up most of my time at the moment.

Yes, for a deck of that vintage, Dolby B would have been the only choice for NR. I could try a Dolby C encoded tape on my CT-F1250 with Dolby B engaged to see what the results would be. Combining Dolby C with HX Pro has been my most preferred method of recording, lately.

Let's see if I have a few blues & rock tunes for you played back on my 1250:

Thank you,I see you have a DBX 4x I had one but I no longer have it as you have to be very careful with it as it will distort the sound and break your speakers if you overdo it,I also had the boom box that DBX put out years ago. It multiplied the lower octaves to give a real lower bass sound,I think that you can find one on eBay if you look for one.

@Nando Can someone or you answer the question I posed about dubbing with Dolby C. I also raised it on TH in case no one here is savant about dubbing.

Ben: Most likely, a Dolby C encoded tape would play back better with Dolby B engaged on the playback deck. Dolby C was supposed to be backward compatible with Dolby B, but it still won't sound right.

The dbx is 3BX and I have the dbx 100 Sub Harmonic Synthesizer. It's still in its original box, unused.

I have never had dolby C play back properly between two decks. It has to be played on the same deck it was recorded on or it sounds way off. So I have stopped using dolby C period and only use dolby B if the recording has lots of quiet passages (e.g. Mannheim Steamroller).

Yes I forgot it is the 3dbx. The sub harmonic Sythesizer is nice. I think I would like mine back. I forgot what I did with it.The 3bx has to be used with caution or you could damage your speakers.I really like your speakers.Did you get them at Innovative Audio?I own Kefs and JBLs and ARs. But the ones you have must sound great. They look like high efficiency speakers.

Thanks Derek for your reply.I dubbed from my Onkyo 2058 to a Denon M700 using Dolby C on both decks and it came out right. BUT when I switched DolbyC off the sound was distorted. Very Strange!!

My decks may not be calibrated properly, you never know with these things. No dolby is preferred, then dolby B as required for me. Dolby C works fine if played back on same deck, things may change as I get better units though.

Do you use an Auxiliary Tape Switcher like my Russosound TMS-1 to switch between the various tape decks you own? The one I have is a Passive Device and gets plugged into the tape monitor I have 2of them to accommodate my decks. I am also putting another upstairs to plug into Tape Monitor 2.

I use a switch box for 4 of my decks in the cabinet. The other two are hooked up direct to the amp, it has the facility for this. The beta hifi and pc also have their own in and out so when I play something through the record player it gets transmitted to all these devices with their own pre-out.

That looks bad but you can clean them up with 91 percent alcohol but you do have some cleaning to do.It is a shame that manufacturers put out that kind of ruinous crap.

I have seen worse but yeah, once these tapes get a few years into them the binder/lubricant breaks down and goes all over the heads. Easy to clean with alcohol, I think mine is 98%, was just hoping I could use that tape to record once I got the recording transferred off it. They can't all be winners I guess.

Ben: I use my dbx 3BX as a form of NR, at times. It reduces the noise floor by at least 10 dB for some of my old LPs, and unlike Dolby it doesn't need to be decoded on playback. I like using the 3BX to improve the dynamics on most of my sourced material, if I find the original recording sounds lifeless. I have been using it for some time while recording to my MiniDisc Master before I make a run of dubbed cassette copies from the MD Master. There are many songs I find that I have selected for a particular feel on a mix tape, and if the original sounds lacking I can help improve the way it sounds. I bet most members I have exchanged mix tapes with could not tell which songs I have used any of my analog sound processing equipment on. And most times, I don't need to use any additional sound processing equipment in my recordings. But used correctly, the dbx 3BX does what I want it to do.

My speakers are Pioneer HPM-150s. I am on the hunt for a pair of HPM-200s in original condition. Gordon at Innovative Audio also has a pair of HPM-150s in his home system. I bought mine at the local mini flea market for $50 each. And we both love these speakers.

Which model JBL, KEF, and ARs have you got? I almost bought a pair of JBL L200s from Innovative Audio.

I have an original-owner CT-F950 and a second one I was alerted to which popped up at a Recycle-It centre. Nick D. has quite a number of them. I think he cornered the market on CT-F950s.

Well, 950 or 900, the second has no metal tape but that's the scheme...

PS I missed the post office the last two days on your package so I have to go Monday.

@Nando I have the Kef105IIs,AR- P128PS it is an amplified speaker, and a JBLp50s upstairs I have a pair of Klipsch KLF10s and a Miller and Kreisel MX125 subwoofer which has not been connected as I get plenty of lower bass from the Klipsch KLF10s.All have been through 3 moves except the M&K subwoofer which was through 1 move. I guess I should sell the subwoofer. It has its own crossover. However, the cost to ship would be overwhelming so I haven't put it on eBay.It is standing upstairs as a table.

My understanding from a tech is that the 900 has better heads than the 950.
