Miles, they are sealed. they all have creased edges and aren't suitable for Dolby C recordings at all, otherwise they work quite fine with no N.R. but i hate that. A bad batch or something and it happens again after my Fuji KII's crappy shells dissapointment, so i must be very careful from now on

I've got some of those, but never had any problems using Dolby C or S.
If a tape turns out te be shit, I toss it and take a new one.

I bought those because i really have some good of them, but those are bad and Dolby C is wavering all the way, maybe the pic doesn't shows too much but the tape is really badly creased on the edge, i opened all of them and just 3 of them are good, well it looks like i'm having some new spare shells

Hitachi UD C90 EX

After Sep had posted pictures of his Hitachi DL90, I remembered I had a few Hitachi tapes including one which was recorded back in September 1981 by a friend, Brian. He had a Pioneer system and he took meticulous care in his recordings. I still play this tape today. It spent most of its life being played in my car. So, that's a testament of how well it has lasted without any sound degradation or tape issues to this day. I might even include a video clip of it playing.

I am sure most have heard ZZ Top, so I will play Side B of the Hitachi UD C90 EX featuring a good Canadian blues /jazz band hailing from Vancouver. This is the Powder Blues Band. Brian recorded this from the band's 1981 album titled "Thirsty Ears."

Great tape the UD-EX Nando and it does play very nice in your system, very nice to see such an old tape playing so perfect even these days. Hitachi made some fine tapes, maybe they were not so widespreaded like the other brands unfortunately and never saw that one. Thanks for sharing

I always liked the look and sound of the Hitachi tapes, nice video of your BX-150 there Nando. That Onkyo auto reverse deck has a nice look too =).

Thanks Sep, Derek. Do you think the Hiatchi is a rebranded Maxell? That's the first thing I thought after I received Brian's recordings in the 80's.

Yes Nando, Hitachi and Maxell were the same using same materials and technologies for making tapes, there's no correlation between models and the DL from Hitachi is infact the UD-I from Maxell speaking about the tapes, both very nice superfeerics anyway. I didn't saw that chrome, the UD-EX you have there but i'm sure it has a Maxell version loaded with that tape too,,, and it's not something new for Maxell as long they started with Hitachi and finished with RAKS

Thank you, Sep. I haven't been able to find any sealed Hitachis from the early 80's in my travels. But, I would certainly snap them up as the Maxells, undoubtedly, would fetch a higher price.

Yes, quite hard to find them sealed Nando, infact i've found the DLs in 60 min version at flippers for ''just'' 10 bucks a tape , i would buy some just for the nostalgia's sake but when seeing the price i said '' the heck with nostalgia '' Well no matter the tape i'm happy spinning some good music, how lucky we are having this great hobby
