The previous owner of the PL2000 pre amp I purchased had previously sent it to a technician for repair of 2 items. The phono stage input was not working on the left side and the on/off switch had broken. The tech came back that he could not locate the fault on the phono portion and recommended a small phono preamp. After gutting the rotary portion of the switch he installed a toggle switch by drilling a hole in the back of the unit. (he should have put a switch on the cord or bypassed it and recommended a power strip)

I contacted Carver Audio (who specializes in Phase Linear) in Oregon who after 3 days said there was nothing they could do about the switch. (Unobtainium dual gang 50k audio taper 1/4" board mounted d-half moon shaft.)

My Electronics Guru (brother-in-law) found the faulty capacitor on the phono stage, replaced it, and not one to give up, located CTS same era switches with a different taper and shaft. Removing the rotary portion of the donor switch he transplanted it onto the original switch. Surgery at it's finest. The pre amp now functions perfectly.

I now have a hole in the back of the unit. If anyone can recommend a headphone jack circuit let me know
as I would like to fill that hole.

Pictures show original gutted switch, surgery, patient in recovery, switch re-installed.

That is the beauty of the old components Jim, if you are careful, you can repair them. No longer so in our throwaway society.

Nice repair dude!!! What a clever way to fix this. One option to fix the hole in the chassis would be to plug it with premade metal plugs that come in various colors.

+1 on Coolness!!

BTW, there are not as many as there were/.
Also Dennis, on the bias brackets, you need to shave another .025 off the main body to get to the P-strap thickness.

Are you referring to the last batch I sent you? If so those were not the latest revision - just left overs from what I beleive was the third revision. Shit - we're on the fourth rev and need at least one more to open up the tunnel. IIRC the rev 4 has approximately 130 thousandths thickness in the dimension related to the thichness of the metal strap to make it work in the worst case P-strap thickness.

Did you like the unreleased remix cd?

You're right - the new dimension is 113 thousandths. I'll see if I can get some more of these built. Any mods required for the 700 faceplate holder?

Phase Linear 2000 Update

After a 20 minute search by 2 clerks at Home Depot, I got a 1/2" plug for the toggle hole in the back of my pre amp. Now the little rats can't get in. Also does any one recognize who signed this pre amp? (Photo 2)

I'll send that pic to Ed. If anyone will, he will.
Thanks. I really like the personalization of these units. Nobody these days would will admit they were responsible for building anything. I tried to order the relay kit from Wattsabundant and he said to send a Paypal email. I have Paypal but have no idea what's a Paypal email. Do you know? I sent a reply but have not heard from them.

A pay-Pal e-mail is a bill from one to the other or a request for a bill. Go to your pay-pal account and request a total from Don on his DCP. That way Don will know as soon as he hits town he can bill ya. Just a reminder to him. he's on the road a lot and I imagine it could get confusing after 10 or 14 days.

You'll need to know his business email address for this. Log into PayPal and goto Send Money. Click on the Purchase tab - enter the email address and then select either Goods or eBay Items - Don is now selling these through eBay. Enter the amount and hit continue. The rest should be spelled out - good luck!
