Cool. Kyle those PEM nut flats sit square on top of the plastic stepped washers. Any little solder splash on them would cause the board to flex when the outputs are installed. I invariably get a little solder on them also. A fine file takes it right off.(I see Joe uses solder wick, while I was typing this)
I also run a tap through them and very lightly lube them with a synthetic bicycle bearing grease.
When you snug those outputs down, we want nice clean lightly lubed threads. Snug them down evenly until the silpad edge starts to curl or wrinkle, then stop. None of mine are tight, just snug.

I have one backplane board mostly populated now. I'm a little confused about the bias transistor (Q6). Does it just bolt down to the backplane board?

It bolts down to the 4-40 screw protruding from the lower aluminum standoff.

From step 5 of the instructions (I know, no one reads the instructions)

This Backplane kit is applicable to the Phase Linear 400 Series 1 chassis with the 8 fin heat sink structure. Use of the 4 fin chassis is possible but bias transistor Q6 must be relocated slightly (coordinates for the Q6 mounting hole center referenced to the hole center of the bottom most TO-3 mounting hole in the column just to the left of it is [1.000, 0.391]. In English, that is 1.000" to the right and 0.395" upwards from it). This applies for both the left and the right channel. Use of this kit in the PL400 Series 2 is the same as the 8 fin PL400 Series 1. There may be other inconsistencies in the 4 fin early amplifiers that you will have to contend with, Phase Linear changed things up frequently in this generation of amps, things settled down when the 8 fin was introduced.

I remember that passage, I had a brain fart moment and got confused. I shoulda dinked around with the hardware before posting. I’m gonna mock up everything with the heat sinks and drill the holes soon. Sometimes you just gotta lay everything out and kinda put it together before it makes sense
