They are both excellent (after the C1 has had the treatment). Carver has excellent Phono Sections but benefit by a few mods

Hey Adam, you need the same quantity of phono preamps as you have of PL700Bs. :) You are just getting started.

Would not expect that Shiit to wipe the Rotel's ass but for 150.00 USA made P.C. board, assembled in the USA, USA made case, small size, brand new with warranty I think you may be surprised. I had been using a Kenwood C2 preamp before and anyone will say that unit has a great phono section. I think the Shiit sounds as good. Perhaps buy one and stick those red replacement op amps, discreet circuits out the top with a big ole huge power supply and it could sit there looking like it has a roots blower on it.

Back to the WOPL400...

I powered on last night with the bottom row installed. Everything came up fine. Voltages look good. I am getting 5.85v on my light board supply feeds. I'm not exactly sure how with this series 2 transformer, but it looks like I'm good to go for my White Oak analog VU light board install.

Tonight I'm going to add in the control board and power on one more time before moving on to the next three rows of transistors (one row at a time of course). I feel like I'm going to be listening to it by the end of the weekend!

I've done 2 Bill D mods on C-1's. One I use in my second WOPL 700b system, and had it for years in stock form. The Bill D Mod really improved it sonically paired with the 700b. I also did essentially the same on a Carver C4000 and that sounds amazing with my first WOPL 700b system. I did not rework the sonic holography as I don't use it. The C-1 is a joy to work on, the C4000 not as easy, but the results are worth the effort.
You will love it!
