Desert Island Mix Tape

I have a mix tape exchange going with a new member at the Tapeheads forum. I received his mix tape, yesterday, and I plan to play it this evening. I sent him a copy of my Pick A Decade All Vinyl mix tape project and when he asked what I would prefer as a theme for him to record, I suggested he pick a number of tracks he would be content to listen to if he was deserted on an island.

I've totally lost the plot....
Just going through their most formidable list of albums, and you'd be hard pressed to find a bad song.
They did HEAPS! At least 9 albums worth of tunes.

Recorded on Sony FeCr NOS. Pretty demanding recording, especially for a pre-90's deck...

Can't get enough of this album. Good for indoor, outdoor and especially 'on the road' listening!

That does bring back some memories.
I'm a bit older than this era, but my little brother ate a lot of cereal, and begged me to play these things on my Thorens TD-124 (which I still use daily) or my Phillipps GA-212. He was banished from my stereo, ruined more albums when he was little, ......maybe it was all that sugar!

Another WOW!

Gahan in optima forma....
Miracle Mile,

Genuine thanks for sharing that cover -- for me it literally put the original performance in a whole new light.

You see, I realize that when listening to music my tendency is to prefer instrumentals to songs with a lead singer. And there are plenty of songs where there is a lead singer, and I still enjoy the song...but I listen to the vocal performance as if they were just another wind instrument in the mix, and hear the sound of their voice, and don't attempt to interpret/process the meaning of the words. And that's how I listened to David Bowie's original version.

But in the Depeche Mode version (for some inexplicable reason) the lyrics themselves became the primary focus for the 1st time out of the literally hundreds of times I've heard this song -- in such a way that I became curious about where Bowie drew his inspiration from. And that story involves the recording studio & it's proximity to the Berlin Wall, back when it was still 'active'. (And of course that sounded like a bit of a tall tale, so I in turn looked up the supposed recording studio & found this. Huh, guess it really happened?)

Anyway, I played the DM version of the song a few times while spending an enjoyable Sunday morning learning more about the original on the interwebs. Funny, 99 out of a 100 covers aren't as good as the original, but the remaining 1% make the original even better by bringing out some heretofore unappreciated aspect of it.

Very cool. Never heard this version before -- thanks again for sharing!

"Bouncin' with Bud"...and the rest of this CD.

No doubt even better from your uncompressed CD source. (!)

Nice. Perfect Sunday morning acoustic landscape...

EDIT: Gonna have to find me my own CD copy Just bought a new CD of this off of ebay for when I break out of my current 'low-res' lifestyle. :0)

Thanks J!m for sharing!

You're welcome, I couldn't have said this better by myself.

I had the change to see Depeche Mode performing this live some years ago, and I'm still speechless thinking about that moment.
