How many amps do I need? The standard wall socket runs 240 volt at 10 amps, which is 2400 watts. I want to be able to do inline testing.

Whats plenty? 1200va does not sound like enough. A WOPL would require 2000 watts plus at full stick, how many VA does the variac have to be to do all testing including inline testing?
 
The audio setup runs on a dedicated 15 amp circuit at 240 volts :evil4:
 
You dont test full tilt through a variac. Straight wall voltage for that.
 
Test it on something you can afford to lose first before you let it loose on something important.
Those Chinese things can be problematic.
I bought the earlier 2kVA model specifically to run up an old JBL amp I have here.
Took the amp right out.
Turned out they had a whole batch that were faulty, but wouldn't pay for damages, only a replacement variac.
