That little bit of reading there should tell you how well Joe understands this particular circuit....

The reason I had you read that is because you had positive rail voltage everywhere and the fact that you had done a wholesale changeout of the caps. Over the years it has been noticed hat after changing all the caps on the board a PL is more susceptible to "latching up"..,..

To apply the "Gepetto" fix, lay 2--1N4148 diodes together, side by side. Reverse the anode/cathode orientation to each other, twist the leads together on their respective ends. Cut off all but 1/2" on each end. Sloder twists, bend in a half moon configuration, then solder to the the exposed leads of C6 on the solder side of the board.....voila....no more latchup.

It is entirely possible you did everything right and this phenomenon derailed all your efforts.....despair not, has happened to a bunch of us...

I reckon we'll find out if you belong in that group...

Like my BlueTooth ?
Checked all the driver transistors. None shorted or open but two are suspect. I do not have any 1N4148 diodes. All I have are two 18 V 1.3 watt 2% zener's, two 11P14's from radio shack and two 12P14's from radio shack so if those will not worl I will make a parts order and come back and post then. I did my reading and it makes sense what you are saying even though I understand almost nothing of the technical part that Joe explained.

Very little makes sense to me either. Gotta have the 1N4148 diodes...

What makes you suspect 2 of the drivers?

I will make an order for the correct diodes on Monday. As far as the suspect transistors I do not recall without going out to the shop the exact numbers but when I wrote suspect I meant that if I have lets say 5, or 10 transistors reading 565 on the diode check function on the meter and the next one is 495 on the diode test across the same pins I was calling that one that measured lower than the others suspect. Out of all 16 transistors I have two that are dead, no doubt reading open and I have 4 of them that read lower than all the rest.

I do not have any more PL 909's or any more 2SD555 transistors I do have 12 MJ15024's, not new ones but good ones.
The amp will come up with just the 4 drivers in the bottom row. Lee probably has already explained it to you. It is the safe way to bring up any new PL amp.

I recall reading that somewhere. I am going to order the no latch up diodes on Monday and report back in after I get them in. Thanks !

Mail will be here shortly, pm me your address. I got some here and in an envelope already.
WOPL, I checked out your images that you have here and they are whiplash bad brother. That console is sweet ! Cant even imagine being in the room with those Klipsh's and the PL 700. Devastating. That setup rules ! Thanks again for sending me the diodes, I was wondering what I was going to do with 98 diodes that I was not to use. Cheapest quickest way to get them was to pay 2.98 for 100...

Ever seen a fat guy run? I had a minute ( seen the mail lady coming), i put some 909's and shit in a box. You should get it all monday. I had just stripped 2 amps, check them before use but the 909's (actually all 24 transistors), came from a working amp. I'm wopling it. Cheers James.

It's a crappy photo but you'll get the Idea. My bro gave me a double recliner couch so I'm comfey.... I wish the room was bigger....

Brother I can see no way to thank you enough ! I was not expecting all of that !I have had met some righteous dudes on the net but good lord man this takes the cake. Maybe I can be of help some day to someone as you have been to me. Hate you ran to mail that stuff off. I am patient when it comes to getting parts I have to be, sometimes it takes me a long time before I can make an order. That console was really nice but I can see how the new one would work out a lot better and its a nice one too. As far as wishing the room was bigger my listening space is 8x15..I am realy bad about swapping out equipment, back and forth to see what sounds best. Here are a few shots. You can see how confined a space it is.

Oh, I thought those were Klipsch speakers but I have never seen a set like those. I thought them Cornwall's but now seeing them face on I have no clue. Did you build them ? 02.jpg 01.jpg 03.jpg 04.jpg

The Speakers are called CornScala's and I bought the KIT from Bob Crites and built them out in the garage and then I got some rosewood veneer and tried my hand at it... They sound so awesome that I have sold most of my speakers. Looking at the picture, I built the Rega Clone turntable, I built the Clair Brothers WOPL, I built the Carver 4000t Pre, and tuners can be a mofo if you don't have the right equipment so I didn't build the Technics Tuna, I just added red LED's. I get lots of satisfaction out of building my own shit (ESPECIALLY IF IT WORKS AND SOUNDS GOOD TOO). Now that my shoulder has healed (mostly), I got some other projects up my sleeve. Me and Glen (Grapplesaw), were collaborating on a couple pairs of MONSTER Mono's so I'd like to finish that. Might as well since he stole all my good parts.... :)
