Good video Nando. Amp has good clarity, though I'm not sure which speakers you were running in the video. Shame your camera can't pick up bass notes. I'd be curious how the receiver does on that. One day I'll have to drop on by for a visit and see your setup, but I'll do that when I replace my current car (another time).

Trevor: Your friend has four SX-1980s! That's a serious Pioneer nut. Hey, if he's not a member here, he should mosey on over and join us. No doubt, our kids can show us a few things about today's technology - just as they can learn from us that because something is old doesn't mean it's obsolete or can't be enjoyed more fully than the latest technical marvel.

Scott: Yes, the little camera doesn't cut it for audio, but I may work around that by recording videos with my old Sony Handycam, instead. You are welcome to drop by for a visit, Scott. I was running all four Web speakers in that video clip.

He has tons of gear, not just Pioneer but that is truly his pride and joy, if you look on EBay now under the pioneer 1980 you will see the "twins" in the last picture. He has 2 setting next to each other with two thorens td125 mk11. Really good guy and has a lot of unique equipment

That was a relatively quick sale, Trevor, especially, considering the holiday season. Someone bought themselves a real nice Christmas gift.

Trevor: Thanks. My camera is a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1. It's the first digital camera I bought six years ago. I was aware that Pioneer conservatively rated their power ratings for their older products. Since owning the SX-1980 for the past 2.5 years, I haven't put many hours on it. It will probably outlast me.

Here's a clip of it playing using my Sony camera to record the video. You will notice I have the Muting switch engaged. Click on image to play video:

A-Ha! - WEB speakers! Small ones are Major I's right with a 10"? I have a pair of Sentry II's doing nothing in my bedroom, same thing only a size up with a 12". What are your iall ones called and any chance of a photo with grills off? Being from North Vancouver, I was in Wilsdon Engineering Brothers showroom/shop quite a lot in the early 70's. Never to buy only to look. I restored (inside and out) a pair of VIP 12's and sold them about 3 years ago. After I was done with them, they were really nice looking speakers I thought.

Sold them to another old ex-North Van boy and he was thrilled, paid a lot too I thought. He sent me e-mails over the next few weeks saying how good he thought they were. What's one man's meat etc.

Yes, the brand was WEB an acronym for Wilsdon Engineering Brothers. Their logo was a spider web embossed on a round metal badge. In the case of what WEB's I have or had, the consensus was that the large drivers were somewhat pedestrian, from CEC. The cone tweeters are phenolic and were very common back then and used in a multitude of brands. It was so common in fact that some company re-issued them in 4 and 8 ohm versions as I learned when looking for a pair for those large VIP 12's. They were blown why the previous owner. The horn in those is just a piezo but I needed those too. Finding one the right physical size was a bugger but I managed to do that by visiting all of the repair shops shops I could find in Vancouver that had anything to do with sound/audio equipment. The 6" mids are driven as a full range and the crossover feeds the other drivers. So rated power handling is not staggering.

I was teenager when WEB was a going concern and they were close by so I used to pop in for a look see from time to time. In addition to building speakers, they sold stereo components but I cannot remember which ones.

Anyone who has encountered WEB speakers usually comments on the cabinet. They are well made, very sturdy and various kinds of real wood veneer was used. You could specify which you wanted if need be and the would make it. They also offered upgraded drivers too for a price. I remember the option of having Trusonic tweeters

I cannot recall what VIP 12's would have sold for but they would not have been cheap. But if memory serves, the 3 way 12" pair I still have were $650 and the small pair in Nando's photo (if they're 10") were about $500. And that was 1970/71 dollars.

Lee,
That makes sense, I like to see what equipment brings as well. I probably could have put it on EBay and got better money but did not want to deal with people stealing outputs and what not so I just waited for a local sale and got $3k.

Trevor: This thread did spawn some conversation regarding the SX-1980, so although your receiver sold, there's now a bit of history behind it.

The discussion on Web speakers will have to continue in a dedicated thread. Nice to see there is some interest in them.

Why would a receiver try to cross the road?
