I haven't checked the internet yet, but are there some basic steps I can do myself to recondition my own 1229Q?

I did one a year or so ago for a friend but his was suffering from atrophy, had to take apart, clean and reassemble the speed change mechanism.

Does everything on yours work - levers, tonearm functions? My philosophy, if it ain't broke.....don't fix it.

Gary: I haven't tried using it as a record changer, but everything seems to function fine. The lever for the pitch control is detached from the shaft, but I can still rotate the pitch knob without the lever.

Lever as in speed change lever? I thought pitch was controlled by rotating a ring underneath that? To be honest, I can't recall how the lever came off. It was either a small hex "grub" screw or it was pressure fit onto a spline. Considering the speed change mechanism below decks was plastic in the one I worked on, I would think it was a set screw. But that lever has to come off first. Might be a similar screw on the pitch control ring. Do you have a set of Allan/Hex keys 1mm & 1.5mm?

There's someone who goes by the handle Dualcan on Vinyl Engine in the Dual section. He (and others) helped a lot with me getting a couple of Duals going again. He also has his own website http://dualcan.com/. He may not have the 1229Q depicted but I believe he has the 1209.

You could post on VE and I'm pretty sure you would not be ignored for long.

I may not have web access until Monday. Leaving on a bit of road trip tomorrow at 6AM so I must get to bed now.

Sorry for the confusion, it is the speed selector lever and it is set for 33. I found some more info here about the disassembly and service of the 1229:

Thanks for your other tips, Gary.

Glad you found that. I looked for it myself yesterday so I could post the link but missed it. It's what I followed to free up the speed change mechanism on my friend's table.

The Steuerpimple is the "clutch" for automatic arm motion. Unless your arm is acting wonky I wouldn't worry about it. FWIW, they're easy to replicate for a 1200 series. Good info about that online too.

What am I listening to?

Found the table from fixmydual.com. Giving a little audition, having a little difficulty with the cartridge sled making contact in the head frame.

I think this guy retrieves these 'tables through a time tunnel- this baby looks nearly brand new. Plinth and cover are newly constructed- and an ace job done on both.

Absolutely 200% satisfied with this purchase!

That is a Pioneer PL-L1000 linear tracker. Jewel #1. Beautiful condition, scored on eBay about 6 years ago for $92! (Nobody bid against me...)

Good to see another resurrected Dual spinning. Still say they are a great bang for the buck. My Duals have always held me back from upgrading to an expensive table for fear the $ wouldn't be worth it. Considering there are 3 1/2 tables in my house, total investment (not counting cartridges) $60 I think I will stick with them for awhile, unfortunately only 1 in rotation now but have enough parts to rebuild a 1249 (winter project) and a 502 that works but will be bastardized for parts.

Mark, did you talk with Bill on the purchase? I hope you enjoyed talking with him as much as I did. Great guy at FIXMYDUAL.COM

BTW, those spiders are beautiful and borderline creepy. Love the 16" vinyl video. I'd never seen those and they make a lot of sense considering the years they were used.

Yeah... Bang for the buck... About that: I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I paid a premium price for this baby.

A few facts, though: visually it doesn't look like it's a year old other than a very small area of pitting of the aluminum of the platter's edge. It had only one previous owner! It's been gone over, all the stuff I would have done has been done for me- so I don't have to disassemble anything, all I have to do is adjust the setdown point from the automatic cycle. The plinth and dustcover are of new manufacture, adding to the beauty- and a great quality job was done on both.

I actually didn't talk with Bill, but exchanged a few short emails for the transaction. I did mention that you directed me to him. Yes, he does seem to be a great guy, and I'm not much for phone conversations anyway. I'll probably get back to him for the 45 stacker, maybe even the LP stacker and another cart sled (it came with two).

Yes- I love those spiders! I catch grasshoppers for them sometimes, they're almost pets! I never kill a spider because they eat bugs. That is, unless it's a Black Widow or a Brown Recluse.

I have three more of those transcription discs that I wanna post. No kidding- did you watch that whole thing? Did it fix your insomnia?

Good to see you found one, Mark. Which cartridge are you using?

Nando.
For now it has an Audio Technica AT13SE2, but I want to get the AT440MLa for it. I have three YouTube projects (the transcription records mentioned above) for which I still need the Rek-O-Kut table, after those are recorded I'll take the Ortofon Super OM from that and mount it on the Dual. The Rek-O-Kut will either go on Craig's List or eBay when I'm done with it.

Mark: Although, at times, I've been fortunate enough to pick up a "worker" turntable from a thrift store, I much prefer to have one that's been serviced, with a known history, and ready to play. That's easily worth the premium you paid to get your Dual 1229Q. Perhaps, tonight, all us Dual turntable owners can feature their favourite LP on the "what are you listening to?" thread?

I've heard a lot of good things about fixmydual. I know you did not pay garage sale pricing....I can guarantee it wasn't $1000+ either, which would be my next jump if and when I'm ready. You will enjoy it. Great pick on the AT 440MLA, give it a good break in, tends to be a bit bright in the beginning. The micro point really cleans up some worn records, it really tracks well.

Im in for tonite Nando...Dualing Duels?!!!
