listening test

Before going any further I have been doing a listening test. First off after I put knobs on and gave them a few turns I could feel them loosen and smooth up. So I gave them all a good rapid twist session and they seemed to respond to that. The guy I bought the unit from said he had "douched it out with Detox It". This morning I hooked up some speakers and a CD player. I tested all the controls and there is no static from any of the pods and they all work as they should it seems. Also the unit has been running for over a hour @ 2 on volume scale and is generating almost No heat at all, if that means anything.

So my question is should I go in on the pods with Detox It or leave well enough alone.

Oh Yea, It sounds smooth as warm butter. Seemed to improve as it warmed up as well.

No reason too .....if the complaint was hard turning pots, the bushing and shaft could have been dirty or rough. That doesn't mean the tracks and wipers are bad....

Some of the pots were a little stiff and like the bass control was quite tight on the negative side of center. But after I eased it all the way to the stop and twisted it through it's full rotation it smoothed right out. Same with the volume control that was feeling pretty gummy. A few moderate twists and then faster about 20-30 or so it is smooth as well. So I won't be hosin' hem out unless they start makin' noise.

I had some old cheeze ball speakers on it all morning (in case of electrical malfuntion ) and they sounded better that they should have. This afternoon I wired up a pair of my Advent Loudspeakers. Nice and smooth playing mainstream jazz. Really diggin' this amp.

All Set Up

Thought I would wrap up this thread saying this was a defiant upgrade for my system. The sound is more level in output through the spectrum which has the low, lows clean, tighter and louder The highs more apparent even to my old ears. Also it looks good, real good in my cabinet. Big, Bold, beautiful and Truly Vintage, which is where my interest lies. So thanks for all the help and encouragement

Quite incredible to realize a receiver, the vintage of your Sansui 5000X, can still be giving pleasure 40 years later. I do have an older quadraphonic Sansui receiver of about the same vintage that still kicks.

output breakup

I have been noticing some breakup in the right speaker pretty early on after I got the 5000 online. this happened with all inputs Phone, tape, CD etc. At first it seamed like it must be the volume control, then I thought it was the balance control as it seemed to help to give it a bunch of twists. But really I was never really able to get rid of it. At one point I didn't play any music on the system for a few days as I was going to pull it and detox the pots. Well I did play something and everything was fine, sounded good. Then the breakup was back, but only after playing for more than a couple of hrs and I have noticed that is the pattern. Plays just fine for about 2hr (haven't actually timed it) then right channel starts to breakup. Today it happened with for the first time both chanels and I turned off the receiver for about 15min an touched nothing else, turned it back on and everything is fine again for over 2o minutes so far. Spooky

Spooky - not so much. I have a 210 that does the same thing. Seems that once it warms up it starts cutting out. I'm figuring it's a bad cap. For my $10 investment I'll get around to it when I can or pawn it off to someone that can work on it and wants a nice small amp.
