Has any of this stuff been tested Lee? I agree, the pics do no justice and plunking down money for untested gear is scary. The amps I can understand as they will probably be gutted but the rest of the gear is not a WOPL to be. I am interested in the TT if the dustcover is not cracked or beat to hell and the tonearm moves correctly and all features working

It all works except for the tape deck. It needs belts. The one pic of the TT DOES look like the dust cover is scratched.

ron your TT is better by far then this one I'm sure. You have like the cream of the crop for tables already!!

Jason, I don't think my table is the cream of the crop but it does what it supposed to and it sounds killer with the V15 Shure's. To my ear, it would be hard to improve upon by much

I will have my other 550 available for sale. I decided I am only going to keep one and do a total resto overtime on it. Thinking of a hardwood Brazilian cherry plinth if I don't go for a re veneer with Tigerwood or pianoblack. The one I will have available does not have a dust cover, strobe light needs to be replaced (does not affect performance in anyway unless you go to manual speed adjustment). Only time I went to manual was for a Iron Maiden bootleg lp that was recorded a bit too fast but if you have a good ear, you don't need the strobe. I guess that is an easy fix anyway. When it's quartz locked mode, you have nothing to worry about anyway LMAO. The motor needs lube I guess. I have to give the platter a slight push to get it going and it goes immediately to speed. Sometimes it starts up on it's own

Compared to some of the super high dollar tables urs might not b the cream of the crop. But vintage wise that is a highly sought after table. I bet it's wayyy better than the PL!!

No, the Pioneer PL L1000 (Phase Linear 8000) is far superior than the Pl550 from Pioneers specs. S/N 70 db versus 78 db, wow/flutter,
speed deviation etc., etc.

Also changing out the crappy Pioneer cartridge that originally came with it improves it more.

However I would like to hear a Shure V15 or Ortofon black on my 8000. I bet either one of those would be awesome.

Well I stand corrected lol. Guess I should look stuff up before I spout off eh!!! Tell ya the truth I had forgot that they were part of pioneer for awhile. So far other than my 700b mine is all Jensen pl stuff. My 3600 sounds pretty damn good to me. I wonder which pl pre is best spec wise?

I would almost bet that the later preamps are probably better due to build quality. The original 2000 and 4000 circuit boards were not
very good quality and then mounting the rca jacks on the board didn't help matters. My 2000 jacks have been changed and mounted to
the back of the case and hard wired to the circuit board.

We need to get Lee to do a shoot out on these pre-amps as he has all the right measuring equipment.

Yeah I hope to be able to upgrade my 700II soon to a full WOPL upgrade. Mine has the early plastic insert knobs. I was talking to
Ed a couple of years ago about having mine gone threw and he had ask me if mine was a full comp. I didn't have the serial number
handy since the amp was stashed away, but he asked me if my unit had solid aluminum gain knobs. He said that those were used
on full comp 700II amps. I just like the looks of the solid knobs, but understand its better to just by-pass them anyway and just leave them for the original look. Were the original full comp units a A.P. Vanmeter design?
Anyway family came first and I never did get around to having it worked on.
How about all the rest of the Series II gear. Was that Phase Linear or some of it Pioneer? T.T. was Pioneer?
I might be interested in the 700II if I knew the condition of the faceplate. Its got to be tits or might as well covert it to a 700B.

That may be true but let's be realistic, those are specs most people would not "hear" and as far as speed deviation, I don't see much possible if it's quartz locked. Setup is a big factor as well as cart choice and even what the TT sits on. The end all be all is the preamp which is why choosing a good cart is important, solid ground etc... I have had some expensive linear trackers back in the late 80s and though cool, they did not stand out in anyway sonically over these 550's. I am spinning a Doors record right now playing The End. If wow/flutter would be an issue, this song would show it. I hear nothing, no pitch variations or whatever. The strobe light is locked dead on, there is no variation of position

I am interested in the 8000 simply because it's a PL. Might be nice to build a matching rack 'o PL. I would also like someday to own the automatic version of the 550, I think it's a 570??? Nando has one I think

I am experimenting with polishing up a Sony dustcover now. If I screw it up, I can always have the local glass place wet sand and polish it up. It had some kind of glue all over it that was pinkish (no it was not dried Mad Dog 20/20 vomit), like freakin' cement but the TT is a pretty cool one, a PL-4000

I have had my technics sp-15 for prob 15 years. It holds speed perfect . Has pitch adjust which I've never had to use and itdoes 33,45,78 . I guess they were used as broadcast tables. Build in japan. At this point I'm using a denon dl-110 cart and with the 3600 sounds great. If have a hard time switchin tables. I am very fond of this TT.just wish I had the og dustcover for it .

Probably spray glue. Use it at work all the time for installing vinyl corner bead. Works well for a lot of other stuff too. Huge pain in the ass to clean off of anything. In fact they make a cleaner specifically for it.
