Hi All,
Well, these K-1020 decks get involved rather quickly. I can see they are not one for the faint of heart. Ha, actually the good deck needs sort of a heart transplant so here it goes. Pictures will follow later....
After a bit of messing with them it was determined that the reel motor assembly is broke in what is planned to be the surviving deck.
A look at the manual and it appears that it should be a simple task, a few screws how difficult can that be? Well, one also has to take the reel assembly apart to get the motor out. Thanks to scotch tape or those little pieces would be gone forever.
A side benifit is that on the donor deck the belt has turned to goo. Does that stuff get everywhere or what?
I now have to reel assembly out and ready to go into the surviving deck.
More later, Off to find the camera now that most of the goo is under control.

Found the heart... One needs to partly remove the capstan on the right to allow room for the reel motor to be removed.

Front side of reel assembly. That hinge assembly is what was broke. It holds the idle wheel and tire assembly.

Deck is playing tunes..... The tire needs to be replaced as it is slipping even during normal play.

Have not tested the record funtions but everything else appears to be working. Now to find a new tire and then fix a few cosmetic things like the control door which is binding.
Oh, it sounded pretty nice through headphones.

They look much nicer than they really are.... They work Ok for cutting small nylon tie bands but that's about all. Radio Shack use to have some similar cheap ones that always lasted much longer. These say USA made but I really have my doubts.
I dug your road case out over the weekend. Will try to get it sent out later this week.

Thanks Lee, Most of my good cutters are either Diamond Horseshoe or Williams but all are getting rather tired. The Williams needle nose with cutters have been amazing. They zip through music wire up to 0.070 inch with not even a mark on the cutting surface. They have cut many 1000's of guitar strings since the 70's and was well used when I got it.
Ordered an idler tire for the K-1020 this morning. Last night I fixed the control cover and a few other cosmetic things. There should be a fair number of remaining parts from the parts deck should anyone need something.

The tire will be a very tight fit if I remember right. I cut the old one off with a knife. Then used a wire brush to get the rest off. Wonder if it is the same as a 1000. Has it played yet?rtp_burnsville said:
I have flush cut dikes that all they cut is ty wraps. If you use reg. dikes it leaves a knife edge and trust me I know. They will cut you. If you worked around me if you didn't own a pair I gave you a pair. LOL Ty wrap cuts. Going in and coming out.

Ditto on the tie band cutting.....
Larry, the deck has played just enough to know that it should work just fine once the tire arrives. It sounded very good through the AKG headphones. The tire is on the rim pretty good. I tried to take it off but then decided not to until I get a new one. It's not melted to the rim, and it flexed about like the NAK tire I did a year or so back.

Update on the K-1020:
After a couple week adventure a new tire arrived. The tire is not really the correct size but it appears to work fine.
The deck sounds very nice, so now I understand all the hording that Larry has been doing with the Yamaha's. The playback speed is a bit fast so will adjust that and also try some recording in the next few days. Thanks again Larry as this is a nice addition to the cassette deck collection.
BTW: If somone here needs some K-1020 parts I have a donor deck which is about 80% complete.

Did you have to cut the old tire off? On the 1000s it is a very tight fit. I trim if off then wire brush it to get it all off.

Hi Larry,
No, it came off with a pair of needle nose pliers, all in one piece. Have been playing the deck all morning and I like the sound. It also did a nice job of recording some things off the CD and radio. Now to adjust the playback speed and then find it a place on the shelf.

I'm going to get rid of mine. It's in pretty decent shape save some light surface scratches it's otherwise clean looking in the rack.
It's for parts.
I got it to function when I first got it, then it stopped. I changed out the belts, then the idler tire. I may have loosened up the idler arm in the process. I'm not sure why it wont do anything now no play FF etc. Just turns on.
Too bad, it's a pretty deck.
What should I ask for it and does anyone want it? Should I toss it on ebay?

Non working deck. I'll give you shipping. Does the meter move? If not then it is a belt. Did you change belts?

Yep changed all the belts and the idler, no tape movement. The meters worked when I first got it and attempted to play a tape, played momentarily then.

Hi,
I have about 85% of a deck for parts if you need them. I would guess between the two you should be able to make one good deck. Mine is missing the idle wheel assembly, function keys but believe most everything else is Ok.
Trashing it really shouldn't be in the cards.... IMHO.

Trashing is out, I'm going to ship it out to Larry next week. The idler wheel might actually be part of the issue. It doesn't like being stressed lol. Me either! Thanks for your offer though!
