In my experience, audible differences in polarity depends on your component system resolution, room configuration and\or treatment, and speaker placement.
For example, my current system has a polarity button on the DAC and I can hear a minor audible difference in bass definition when sitting in the sweet spot and the button is switched back and forth. However, like Paul indicated, I do not think I could identify the setting (normal or inverted) after coming back days later without A-B-A listening.
I have an active sub (JL Fathom F113) in combination with main 2 channel full range speakers (B&W 802). Placement within the room between the sub and main speakers has an audible effect on difference in polarity. I love the ability to rattle the neighbors windows when desired…
I set the polarity based on preferred audible sound and just leave it, unless evaluating new components or setups.
