Yep, Minamata disease. Mercury softens animal pelts and made it easier to form hats. Insanity, paralysis, coma and then death. Better be a helluva hat...

Was just reading a novel about the Dutch trading with the Japanese, early years when there was still a shogun in Edo. Mercury was a very profitable Dutch import to Japan for treating syphilis.
