After listening to Sutton's PLWO 550, and noticing the difference dynamic headroom makes between 275 and 525 watts per channel, WHAT IN GOD"S NAME WILL THIS MONSTER SOUND LIKE!!!!

(preliminary estimate--700 WPC)

It may take some commercial speakers to extract the level of performance the amplifier will be capable of at full volume (where else?). I like the vintage Altec Voice of the Theater (VOTT) for sheer low frequency reinforcement. The cabinets used for the movie "Earthquake" were pretty solid and used Cerwin Vega-branded BGW Systems Model 750 1,500 Watt amps driving Cerwin Vega Model 189E 18" drivers but only had to perform from 17 to 120 Hz. They called it "Sensurround" back in 1974.

Here is the speaker system you need. You will have to purchase some 15" JBL woofers (model 2215 low frequency drivers), some mid JBL horns (model 2420 drivers with model 2391 horns), some HF JBL drivers (model 2405 transducers) and put these in some 19 cubic foot cabinets with a 40 Hz non-ducted port. Now that is what I call a speaker... (I think there are 37 cabinets in this picture)

According to Jim Gamble, at the time vice president and director of engineering at Tycobrahe Sound Co. in Hermosa Beach, CA; those were 8 foot long bass horns driven by four 18" JBL woofers (model 2240). At 160 feet from the sound towers (the location of the mixing board) they measured 126 db, at one mile from the sound towers the sound was still at 105 db. That's Laatsch Level, 54,000 Watts!

I was there, it was awesome.

Of course, there were two towers on either side of the California Jam stage and another tower feet 1000 feet distant from the stage. The sound company introduced a 859 msec delay from the front tower to the back so that the music arrived at the same time for the folks who got there late. The delay was accomplished by using tape delay recorders synchronized by an Eventide Clockworks digital delay unit. In-between acts, the vocals sounded a bit funny, but the music was right on the money.

I was probably playing hookey from Wheatland High School in Wheatland Wyo, fishing on the Laramie or North Laramie river.

Finally got some better toroids for the monster. Surplus windings for some Mark Levinson gear. Dual 120 volt primaries, 163 volt center tapped and 112 center tapped secondaries, 8 amp.

Not to mention 90,000 uF of cap-zapitors. That PS will surge 30A when you plug it in, are you contacting the local power utility so they will know it's you when the spike hits the grid?

Sheesh!

Na, they're use to it here, heck we don't have to soft start stuff till we hit 150 HP. That pic represents the left and right channel power supply. I won't be hitting the switch for both at the same time.

Macintosh has some VERY high powered stuff and so does Crown. Thery would make this amp seem small. 650-700 RMS into 8 ohms is my guess. It's not all that difficult, I'm using Joe's board to drive it. That's the hard part, designing the board, the rest is parts changin'.

I was just thinking about the Krell Master Reference amplifiers. 700lbs, 1000w 8 ohm, 8000w 1 ohm. Lol. Someone makes a 20kw amp crazy.

I like the work and pics I saw earlier in the post. My PS Audio 200c used a complete copper bus bar config, so that all the caps and output devices are all connect together with the bars, the output device pass through the bars to the board, then the rail is folded so one side attaches to the heat sinks. It's an odd looking layout inside as the caps have to lie flat to also shorten the path. Much lower power then your dealing with tho!

It was decided a couple days ago the 'ol 21196'ers wont be up to the job. Gonna have to go with some MJ4218's with a form factor of TO-264.
