He may well have been talking manufacturing costs but yes, sound from a cartridge is as important as speakers. The cost has a wider range than just different gauge copper (comparing to those wires) as the diamond shape and how it is affixed to the cantilever varies quite a bit. I don't know any less than a few hundred buck cartridges that have nude diamonds to say nothing of special cut diamonds, the VdH, FG, Shibata, LT, ML and such all a bit different and someone/thing has to cut them right and get em polished. Not just some diamond chip glued to a stub to be affixed to a cantilever like those bonded tip styli.
