I finally found this compilation with mostly true stereo tracks. I did a comparison with a 1981 LP on the London label "electronically re-processed for stereo", and the bass, percussion is full and distinct here on songs like Come And Stay With Me ...instead of disappearing in the thin sounding London pressing. This record has a few different tracks too - including North Country Maid and Wild Mountain Tyme.
 
been going through the Elton John 5.1 Surround SACD's. these recordings are of exceptional high quality by any standard. hard to believe that they were done 40 or so years ago.

Been since the introduction of SACD that I've listened to 5.1 SACD. I recall it sounded really amazing on even some modest equipment.

indeed. i just wish more rock albums were available in this format.

DVD-A can be very good as well, but i prefer SACD. its just a bit smoother and sweeter.
 
Ah I remember DVD-A multichannel audio too. Had them both in our store at the same time as I recall. Instantly "wowed".

Picked up a few LP's yesterday, at 25 cents a pop. First played was a quad-compatible "Also Sprach Zarathustra," from 1975. It had lots of pops, but a good performance, and the LP didn't look all that bad. Then I put on "Switched-On Bach," bar-coded and ID's as a "Wendy" not a "Walter," so it wasn't an early copy. It was superb! No pops, no crackle, no snap, just music. Wonderful! Then I was trying to clean some other LP, and finally took it to the kitchen sink, and washed it with dish soap and water. My Audio Cleanica does have its limits. Washing made a big difference, but I haven't played it yet. The label came out fine, too. If you haven't tried the method yet, do it with some no-account LP for practice.
