After all, specs are 290 @ 6, so I think I could probably squeeze an extra 10 out of it.

...This was in my mailbox last night. I wonder if they used the original quad mix for this version? The mix is radically different from the stereo mix. "Gypsy Queen" has some Latin sounding yells thrown in. "Samba Pa Ti" has the lead guitar mixed like Carlos is a mile away. Interesting, but nowhere as good as the stereo mix.

It's the DTS 5.1 High Definition Surround version. It's out of print and I paid a pretty penny for a sealed copy. I have the 5.1 version of "Crazy Eyes" by Poco that DTS put out and I love it. Even the vocals on "Black Magic Woman" sound like an alternate take. I've read that many early quad releases were quite different from the stereo counterparts. This one would be a prime example. I've never heard the quad version of "Machine Head" but I've read that the guitar solo on "Highway Star" is not the same as the stereo one we all know and love. I think "Abraxas" took things too far because it really made it sound like a different album. I would have much preferred a surround version with the same takes as the stereo version. DTS has also put out a 5.1 version of Edgar Winter's "Jasmine Nightdreams" album. It can still be had for a reasonable price. I'm tempted...
