what are you listening to?

Probably 30 years since I played this or any other Steely Dan record. I forgot how polished and professional they were.
Kinda highly refined like a Honda car or Ridgeline pickup. I prefer a old Chevy or Jeep. Enough Steely Dan.
 
Lee, I honestly tried, listened to all four sides of that double album. Just too damn polished and little substance to the lyrics.

I have too George....I have a hard time defining exactly why, still don't know.....it's just after a couple songs I'm done. And it's sad, some of the best engineered recordings on the planet, and I can't hang for more than a couple...
 
I can manage to listen to more of Pretzel Logic than anything else as the lyrics in some of those tunes have some bite. Of course, the musicianship and recording production cannot be topped but overall they've always struck me as a perfect reflection of Los Angeles: sleek, shiny, little substance.

But I tend to prefer words to lyrics, anyways.

Interesting tangent discussion. I listen past the vocals for the most part. They jam tight and I agree ... the records are well engineered. Lots of space and punch, especially in something like 'Aja'.
 
I think bands had made an impression on you if you remember the first time you heard them. I heard Steely Dan's Greatest Hits being played on my best friend's brother's Honda Gold Wing cassette deck while he was detailing his bike. Still enjoy their music.

Mr. Lewis was my last great jazz artist for the Patten Performances. He is a gentleman of the first order. Great show - just solo on a 9 ft Steinway.
