That's a more modern-looking tt. I have a Pioneer PL-7, which also has a carbon fiber tone arm, and will rival the Pro-Ject 1Xpression III in the spec department. I bought it for $20 years ago and I spent $200 on an NOS Yamaha MC-1 cartridge. What sort of price range are you looking at for a used Pro-Ject 1Xpression III?

Nando, I gave Bob Carey a PL-7 that was part of the big load of gear I gave him to sell off for me this past Spring. I did not know it was a good TT, I noticed the tonearm but everything else looks cheap on it. I don't think he sold anything yet (that I gave him) as he has other issues to deal with and has for awhile

The Xpression is running about $399. They have taken the deck I wanted offline (soundstagedirect) as sold. Funny how it happened immediately after I talked with them on the phone asking a few questions. Gail informed me after that they called back and advised the TT was sold but to keep my eye on them for future demo sales. Sounded funny to me so I checked received calls on the phone and did not see their number come up. I may be the proud owner of one already and don't even know it, Gail is known for doing things like that.


My reasons for the Xpression:

Carbon tonearm

decoupled motor

Acrylic Platter

It's not a dated TT

Could vintage TT's rival the specs - sure they do - I just didn't want to deal with another 40+ year old piece of equipment. Tough enough keeping the Duals online.

The PL-7's are running $50-$125 now. Add a good cartridge and you're in the 3 bill range. A few bucks more could get me years of trouble free play.

I'll save my vintage purchases ($10-$50) as a hobby, love to see if I can resurrect these relics. Unfortunately sitting on a bunch of equipment now that works (mostly) and should be rotated in and out of a system.
 
I agree with you there, Dave - get a turntable that's newer, with less worry about having to delve into maintenance issues. So, you figure your wife might have set aside a Christmas gift for you, already? That would be awesome.

IIRC Skynyrd/Jason was going to send me a PL-7 once, I have a PL-4 and PL-610 as well.

I remembered that when I first picked up this record a few years ago, I found the original purchase receipt inside the cover ...sold for $3.79 + .15 tax ...dated Oct 14, 1968 from "The Singer Company, Ala Moana Center, Honolulu, Hawaii". Spinning this one because I'm heading to Hawaii tomorrow for a family vacation on Oahu. I won't miss the job while I'm gone, but will miss the turntable.

Nina Simone: Wild Is The Wind

The title track is classic and the whole album is solid. Her albums on Philips probably represent my favorite Nina Simone period.
