for sound quality, it's more than just good mastering and recording engineers, it's how close to the original master tapes is the pressing. I'd say that good engineers weren't rare because every major label - Capital, Columbia, Atlantic, etc - had great engineers and many of the smaller labels just subcontracted with the same mastering houses as the big guys - STERLING, MASTERDISK, etc.

and because later pressings (the majority of records you'd run into with big selling records) often/always used later generations (dubs) of source tapes. same case often with stuff recorded overseas (for example the Beatles) where the US label received later generations of source tapes -- and, again as in the case of the Beatles, the non-local label did their own mastering of the recording. Dave Dexter for the US Capitol Beatles releases - watered down lifeless sounding, "Dexterized". And stupid fake stereo stuff like Duophonic.
