Is the Super OM30 a Shibata?
The 30 is a fine line, perhaps Ortofon's version of a almost- Shibata. Specs say radius of 8/40 µm, don't know how that translates to mils. The 40 states "nude FG 70" with dimensions of 5/70 µm, probably as close to Shibata as they can get without stepping on Audio Technica's patent.

Ya know, after comparing the OM10 and the AT440MLa, I have to admit that the ortofon has a warmness that the 440 does not, however the 440 excels in inner groove tracking, treble response and separation, the bass isn't too bad either, overall a brilliant cart. I'd still be interested in trying an OM40 and V15 Type 3 with JICO SAS Stylus one day.

My Entry Level Pioneer SPL-110 does not seem to have a height adjustment for the arm so its a little out using the Ort cartridge, I'm going to have to put the Signet MR5.0 Basic cart on that once a new stylus ($40) is ordered, an outstanding cart for the price. The Stylus on the OM10 seem to last a long time, I use mine to play less than perfect records on the Pioneer at the moment. The 440 stays on the Thorens 160 Super and I love the sound that comes from that, can't beat that cart for the price. Replacement Microline Stylus is around $180.
I'm using the OM 30 in a Pioneer PL-L1000 linear tracker, I really don't hear any inner groove error. I had an AT440MLa on a Harman/Kardon ST-7 (also a line tracker) and thought it was a little on the bright side. Point shape, cart electronics, arm type, and alignment geometry are all interdependent- and every ear is going to hear something different. I have this fear that if I upgrade to the stylus 40 it's going to sound too different. $285 for that sucker, too!

I have an OM 10 (just recently purchased from Ron (Northwinds)) for my less than perfect records, the points are interchangeable- and that was a big move for me to go to Ortofon since I have a lot of shellac 78s and a few old mono LPs- so I bought the 1mil and 3mil points to play those antiques. I think Grado supplies a whole range of different points- I could buy a new Harley Fat Boy for the set. I'm not rich enough for that.

I gave the AT440MLa away along with the ST-7 because the tracking system was too finicky- I wish I would have kept the cart! Apart from the slight "brightness", I did like the separation and depth of the sound. It was a goodie- but I pissed it away. I still have an old AT13Es that sounds damned close to the V15/III, getting more difficult to find an original Audio Technica replacement stylus for it (Jico?). I think the major contribution to the Audio Technica sound is the arrangement of those tiny little magnets attached directly to the cantilever- gives it a unique character.

Nice spin. My favorite EC record.
Great album, but the master they took it from could have been better. I can detect tape wear and some minor drop outs, especially on the first track, many people don't notice it but I do. Most likely something to do with the 2nd or 3rd generation master they used in australia for the record pressings. Overall a stellar album though. Cheers

I might upload this one to youtube so you can hear what I mean.

JOY DIVISION

Joy Division:
"Unknown Pleasures", "Closer". Both 2007 Rhino remasters. "Closer" is my favorite of the two. Rhino did a good job on these remasters.
12" 45rpm single of "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Side one cut a bit on the HOT side, side two has "These Days" and a great remix of "Love...".

I'm the Red Knight, by grant of the Black
I'm rocking the Lazbah with some assorted classical, marveling at both the power and the delicacy of the new monoblocks. They just loaf along, cool as 'cukes.
