Hello and thanks for putting out the welcome mat.

I’m only here, with the intent that it would be briefly, because I stumbled across the eBay listing for Larry's Phase Linear 700B, and was intrigued. Because the listing stated that the amp was documented extensively over here, I came to have a look at that very long thread and found that I needed to join in order to see the hosted pictures.

Knowing the story behind it and getting a feel for the characters involved makes me feel I want to own this thing. Should I bid or will I regret it in the morning?

The only way I could use the 700B right now would be to replace the Carver in this system:
Infinity Renaissance 90’s
Carver TFM-35
Hafler IRIS pre
JVC QL-Y5F turntable
NAD C565BEE CD player

I don’t know if that makes sense. I picked up the TFM to use with the Ren 90’s with their EMIT and EMIM ribbon drivers partially based on Bob Carver’s claim that “the TFM amplifiers were designed specifically to drive the demanding load of the Amazing ribbon loudspeakers.” Is he saying the previous designs weren’t really up to that task?

LOL I want you to bid. I don't even know what it sounds like. I know what it sounded like before it left. Sounded good then. I'm not a numbers kinda guy. I try to go by my ears. That is all me though. It was a nice amp before is all I can say.

You will regret nothing by buying that amp. Driving a 4 ohm (and lower at certain freq's) HARD, will necessitate some air moving over the heatsinks. That is the only precaution i would recommend for driving this amp at rated load. I'll guarantee you 482 into 8 , with a minimum of 117 volts AC mains.Into 4 ohms, depending on how inductive/reactive your load is a minimum of 725 watts .
It's guaranteed for a year. the TFM's have a switching power supply and the rest is marketing hype.
The 700 is no longer a 700. we refer to them around here as a WOPL 1000. (White Oaker Phase Linear)

he was saying in stock form the TFM's could handle the lower ohm rating better. With proper cooling, I would say the edge goes to the WOPL. Wish i had a TFM to wring out in the cave.
I see why you joined and that was the intent when i listed this amp as I did. Once exposed to this pl,ace it kinda grows on ya. Any questions just ask. This amp and I are intimate.
