Hey Dave, I'm not familiar with your project gear, how sensitive is it? Does walking near it cause issues? What type of flooring/sub flooring is it on?

Are you hearing smears in the sf in the highs or the lows? Air borne issues...i.e. bass for the speakers?

I would go the cheap fun route. I'm sure Chicago has a used sporting goods store, get 4 used hockey pucks, hit the local Home Depot for 4 small pieces of MDF board and if they have any hardwood, get 4 small pieces of that, play with the wood on top, bottom and sandwiching the hockey pucks!

You can always get some spiked cones on line to transfer energy up or down...you can even use 3 pieces (Steve Evans uses 3 on his amps) instead of 4, drive yourself nuts buddy!!

In my tiny NYC apt I had no place to put my Thorens except on top of the sub woofer and it's wonderful sub chassis suspension allowed no nasties :shaking: to come through. The above mentioned Steve Evans confirmed that the TD 125 MKII has one of the finest isolated suspended platters out there for a reasonable amount of money, I say this because I'm not sure what a slab of granite costs for your needs

Hey Stuwee...the Pro-Ject is sonically sounding sweet at this point. She rests on three spikes on a solid wood hutch on a wood floor. I was bouncing the needles on the WOPL the other day and my TT needle started to bounce. My speaker is only about 8" away resting on the floor. My only thought was to put more mass under the TT...a 1 1/2" granite breadboard would only run about $45, probably find a remnant cheaper. Late night thinking.....

Back in the house in Happyrock, my stereo was on carpet, hardwood, and joists - I had the turntable on a heavy slab of plex, with sorbothane pucks under that, all on top of a Sanus rack. It worked fine. Here in Independence, the stereo is on thin carpet over a concrete floor, so the plex and pucks are not needed. Do what you must, just don't be totally OCD about it.

I use a Starrett granite block >100 lbs under my TT with good results. I have isolation pads under the granite and also under the TT, and the granite block sets on a pretty heavy table, and I have bags of lead on top of the granite block. I will add a pic to this thread asap.

I've always thought that the guys cutting those granite counter tops should have some end cuts about the right size for a turntable. Find one a little bigger than you need and have them cut it to size. Those straight cuts aren't all that expensive and it's just extra cash in their pocket from what's normally scrap.

That's actually what I was going to do. We have a stone cutting shop pretty close by and I was going to check them out for remnants....although a headstone would work.....hmmmmm

Late night thinking is always good, I'm up late most nights, are these your B & W's? http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649033731-b_amp_w_808_world_class_full_range_speakers/

I ask because I think you might have an airborne issue rather than from the floor. 3 spikes on a solid (antique hardwood?) hutch on a wood floor...(suspended? cross joined? any slab underneath?) makes me think your floor is stable. Can you jump up and down within 2 feet of the hutch and make it skip? Is the Pro-Ject sitting on top of the hutch or inside one of the shelves?

Can you post a pic of it? thanks bud, Craig

Best I've see so far - $45 (w/shipping $126.) for an 18"X18"X3" 120lbs surface plate (www.grizzly.com). Gonna be looking locally, pretty sure one will turn up - flea market season soon.

Stuwee, not the 808's I own but those are the ones. Cabinets were pretty messed up on mine when I got them, cleaned up good though. I'll post some pics tonite to show how TT set up in relation to the speaks.

one of the members here made them from acrylic.... I want one 2" thick frosted, with red LED's..... Acrylic is denser than MDF so would work great.

Hey Dave, flea market cheap makes sense! Nothing wrong with a solid underfooting for any TT. Those B&W's look serious in the bass and mids when you get to pegging, is there a nice thick acrylic dust cover for the Pro-Ject?

Hey bud, thanks for the pics! Awesome set up ya have, I can't wait to hear it this summer!! :hello1: :hello1: . Those 808's are beasts! The ProJect has a very thin plinth and as you said surprisingly stable. Very few TT's can be that close to speakers like those (the mids are RIGHT THERE and the upper woofer isn't much farther). You could have some massive energy coming up from the floor too. I assume you play Lps with the dust cover closed? You might try placing a heavy towel over it and pegging the WOPL again and see what happens...I'm still thinking airborne vibes here.

If that doesn't pan out, you may have to look into spiking the speakers. It doesn't look like you have much room to move them outwards (and hopefully not mess up the sound stage). How much do those puppys weigh??

They weigh in at 186lbs each Craig. I have the cones for them, minus the receptacle....needed for the wood floor. Would be a bitch to mount them and set upright. In no hurry to rectify the problem, buying season coming up...never know what you find!

Holy moly! I weigh just 60 lbs. more than one of those and I recall losing 100 lbs. instantly, by dropping a cheating girlfriend!

Altec Stonehenge Is are only ~70-80 lbs. combined!
