Ok, so I gone and "done it" here. No preamp, and I have a tape deck just because I like to play with tapes every now and then. Aside from that, here's what the "sound" here now looks like...

I have two sound cards in operation. The internal one is strictly to feed the tape deck should I be recording to tape. The ASUS is for the main playback of all digital sources (including CD) AND is fed directly into the power amp. With a SNR of 124 DB, it is dead quiet. It is also perfectly balanced and sounds incredible with no preamp in between it and the power. Yeah Larry.. wish ya could come by and listen... :thumbright:

I used to like to plug my iPhone into my stereo and stream Pandora. The phone has a more robust output then other iPods I've heard. Why are you running your tape deck into the PC?

I wouldn't compare the ASUS to an iPhone - note how the AA Dac is just used when I record to tape. The ASUS smacks the AA Dac silly and calls it "Daddy".. (sorry Larry ). The AA Dac is there to provide a better analog signal to the tape deck's inputs for analog recording, since I can't exactly wrap the analog outputs on the Asus back through (would be a heck of a feedback loop there).

The tape deck outputs are ran into the analog inputs of the ASUS so that I can listen to tape/monitor the 3 head recording with the ASUS still providing the function of a preamp, and to record from tape to digital as I'm doing with the traveling guitar tapes.

Jerry their are numerous reasons we run preamps. Tuners, TTs,R2Rs. Sometimes even 2 decks. Man can not live by digital alone. LOL Yea I wish I could come and hear it. We are working on that issue.

It is good that you like your set-up. On my digital I work very hard at getting the sound I like. You board is made very well. I may one day get a nice card. It is on my list. I am learning things with this system.

iPhone wasn't really to compare other then being an increased level of heresy :alien:

But I enjoyed it a lot. (before I fried the output) I use it to much as a web browser when I'm listening to music, so I don't really feel like plugging it in. I don't think I'll be going a PC route myself, but I was looking at a cambridge dac that also has a Bluetooth streaming add on which might work *shrug*. I just want a simple but decent way to stream Pandora (squeeze box?)

Peace

I use Spotify. I like it a lot. I have to find a way to convert my Toslink connection to coax or something else to go into the DAC. I use the Tos connection for the TV.

Oh I know there are better quality out there than the AA gear. No reason to be sorry. LOL

I was thinking about it quite a bit, but honestly I can't see me using a TT. For tape, the Denon's pretty nice soundwise so that's really all I need in the Analog department. The ASUS certainly has the sound and the specs to match.

Sure thing. Seriously tho.. I have tried just about every possible card from all of the Creative/EMU's to the M-Audio, and this ASUS has 'em all beat, hands down. The M-Audio is "close", but those guys need to make a better 64 bit Win7 driver - the one they have is fraught with issues, especially trying to get it to record without buffer underruns (and I have a six core AMD, so it's not like I'm running out of CPU power).

Yikes.. how did you fry the output? Another nice thing with the ASUS is swappable op amps - the I/V converters and the output buffer amp are all in IC sockets so you can change 'em out with other flavors of op amps to suit your taste. Or hmm.. hopefully not, but if I ever fry the output then it should be easy enough to repair, I hope?
