- Broken beyond repair but highly affable
That's what is being said today about the Lufthansa-based Germanwings charter that descended from 38,000 feet for a brief time to crash into the French Alps at about cruising speed.
The pilot went to use the restroom and he heard a sequence of events (according to the flight recorder) that meant the co-pilot was taking the plane into descent mode (not something that can be done ACCIDENTALLY, it takes deliberate effort). The pilot identified himself to the co-pilot to no avail and the entry code failed to open the door as it can be OVERRIDDEN if the crew thinks they are in danger. According to reports the sounds of the pilot attempting to break the door open and lots of screaming were heard and not one word from the co-pilot.
This co-pilot was relatively new with the company, not thought to be a terrorist but had enough but seemed intent on crashing the aircraft. He was 28 and a German citizen.
If the pilot had peed before they left....and now that's not funny anymore.
